Evaluator: Jake Boes

Age: 26 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 210 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 Round 1
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Lean, athletic body; square shoulders, trim torso with long arms; high waist with long, slender legs. Shows flexibility and bounce on the mound. Injury history includes Tommy John surgery in July, 2017; general arm fatigue November, 2018; lat injury March, 2019; and a patella tear in the right knee June, 2019. Brother of current MLB reliever Nick Burdi.

Delivery & Mechanics: Stretch exclusively from a 3/4 slot with moderate effort. Short arm path and extension yields moderate deception; alternates which side of the rubber he works from with a strong, pronounced follow through; falls to the first base side. Typical reliever mentality; high-energy, high-motor presence but shows poise on the mound.

Fastball: 96-97 t99 with riding life in the zone; inconsistent command running in on same-sided batters. Explodes out of the hand but tends to get flat when thrown inside to opposite-sided batters. Double-plus velocity that sits more plus due to the command. Grade: 60

Slider: 87-90 with inconsistent desired shape and feel; flashes plus but sits fringe-average with limited command. Movement varies greatly pitch-to-pitch; some feature traditional, late slider bite with teeth; others more horizontal mimicking a cutter. When thrown arm side, the movement trends more vertically. There is potential for average, but considering the lack of remaining projection, inconsistencies with command, and the varying movements, a fringe grade is more appropriate. Grade: 45

Changeup: Under-utilized offering within a similar velocity band as the slider; 88-92 with fade and flashing darting drop. Throws it to hitters from both sides of the plate and will use it for a called strike and chase when ahead. An above-average pitch that needs higher usage to realize its true potential. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Fringe-average control with well below average command; misses the glove too consistently to warrant a late inning role on a competitive team, but throws enough strikes to warrant a middle bullpen role. The electric stuff masks some shortcomings with command; fastball/slider heavy arsenal that may improve with increased changeup usage. Control: 45 | Command: 30

Overall: With limited projection remaining, Burdi has essentially reached his role at the major league level. Because of his stuff, a late-inning role will always be in the cards, but it would take a drastic improvement with his command to reach it--making his current middle relief bullpen role a likely stalemate for him long-term.
