Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Anthony Franco

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2020 Round 3
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Listed at 6'0, 190. Medium build. Muscular arms and shoulders. Narrow frame, particularly in hips, caps potential physical projection.

Hit: Upright, slightly open stance with hands behind head. Small leg kick as timing mechanism. Pretty fluid weight transfer as left-handed hitter; a little stiffer and forced from the right side. Above-average bat speed as LHH; average bat speed as RHH. Current bat path is suboptimal; chops downhill and limits the amount of time his bat is on plane and in the hitting zone. Has good, strong hands through contact when he finds the barrel. Average bat control as LHH, fringe as RHH. Patient approach with discerning strike zone feel from both sides. Might be some swing-and-miss in his game but picks good pitches and peppers the gaps with solid contact, so he should compensate with high BABIPs. Grade: 50

Power: Fringe-average raw power. Bat path issues prevent him from lifting the ball and check current in-game power, but there's some potential for growth with a swing adjustment. Grade: 40

Field: Warren showed average infield actions at third base on the Cape in 2019. Converted to catcher his junior season at CMU but didn't get much in-game experience because of the COVID-19 shutdown. Will be interesting to see his development behind the plate (Milwaukee announced him as a catcher on draft day) but has floor of average defense at third in his back pocket. Grade: 50

Arm: Above-average arm strength was sufficient to make necessary plays at third and should be fine behind the plate. Grade: 55

Run: Below-average to fringe-average home-to-first times in summer ball. Grade: 45

Overall: Warren's a really interesting third-round flier. It's a collection of generally average physical tools but he has a track record of performance. Warren was one of the most productive players in the MAC during his time at Central Michigan and, more importantly for his pro evaluation, showed well on the Cape the summer before his draft year. He's got interesting offensive traits, particularly as a left-handed hitter- bat speed, strike zone feel, bat control- and a bat path adjustment could help him get to some in-game power. If a mechanical tweak enables him to hit for a little more power or if he proves to be a viable defensive catcher, he's a quality MLB role player. If both those things click, he's an above-average everyday player.
