Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 162 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Tall athletic frame, high waisted with lots of room to add muscle. At this point present strength is lacking.

Hit: Good bat to ball skills, linear plane, most contact comes in the way of line drives and ground balls. Sets up closed off at plate showing his numbers to the pitcher. Slight leg lift trigger, quiet hands, above average bat speed. Patient approach at the plate will work the count. Some difficulty picking up spin. Lack of impact at the point of contact. Inside out approach that relies on above-average foot speed. Grade: 40

Power: Lack of present power, some projection remains that he can get to a below average power profile. At this point over-the-fence power is not part of Tovar's game. Grade: 30

Field: Strong athletic defender at shortstop. Quick first step and cat-like reflexes defensively. Good range, covers a lot of space on the left side of the dirt. Clean infield actions with smooth motions and clean hands. Flashy player at times showcasing his strong glove skills. There are no questions about whether or not Tovar can stick at shortstop long term. Grade: 60

Arm: Strong throwing arm with ability to make hard accurate throws. Shows zip and carry consistently from deep in the hole, hits his intended target with regularity and gets rid of the ball quickly. Grade: 55

Run: Above average run times that could slow as he matures, but should settle as an average runner long term. Shows strong instincts on the bases, stealing at a high success rate. Shows quickness in the field and agility moving laterally. Grade: 55

Overall: Below average hitter with supporting skills that may allow him to carve out a long term utility role if his offensive skills don't improve with time. One of the best infield defenders in the system and an asset on the base paths.

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 205 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Draft - Round 9
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Tall muscular build, slightly above average height for a catcher, physically maxed out but in good physical condition.

Hit: Sets up square to the pitcher, slightly closed, quiet stroke, good angle on bat, minimal movement in the lower half. Average bat to ball skills and hand eye coordination. Some power at the point of contact that leads to a fair percentage of flyball and hard line drive contact. Heavy pull side approach. Looks to jump and turn on any fastball on the inner-half. Good zone hitter, needs to improve patience at the plate. Grade: 45

Power: Shows the ability to tap into power to his pull side and the reports from instructional ball have been strong. He puts the ball in the air with regularity and has continued to add in-game power over the last year plus. Good bat angle and plate coverage allow him to drive the ball to all fields. Grade: 50

Field: Converted to part time catching his junior season at Washington. Has continued to improve and the organization has heaped praise. Comfortable and athletic in crouch, pop times average or better, and his receiving has continued to make strides from below average early in 2019. Chance to develop into an average defensive catcher, needs to improve his game calling skills. Grade: 45

Arm: Average arm behind the plate, natural third baseman still improving his ability to catch and throw. Had around a 40% caught stealing rate in Low-A Asheville in 2019. Surprisingly high awareness behind the plate. Not scared to keep runners on their toes with accurate quick throws to first. Grade: 50

Run: Below average runner but does move well underway. Station to station for the most part but not the slowest guy on the field. Grade: 40

Overall: Improving overall profile and an underrated player in the system. Has a chance to carve out a role as a backup catcher at the major league level. Improving defense and enough bat that he can be a league average offensive producer at the catcher position. Needs to see continued development in the catch and throw part of the game. Continues to make strides at a demanding position.

Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 20 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 192 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2016 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Tall, lean, high waisted, and broad-shouldered, projectable frame, looks like he could add 10-15 pounds of good weight in the coming years as his body matures.

Delivery & Mechanics: Starts his full delivery from a wide stance with his hips open to the plate. Starts his motion, pronating his front leg, turning his hips, contracting into a moderate leg lift, before driving and delivering from a three-quarters arm slot. Gets around the ball on all of his pitches, leading to a lot of cut in his movement profile. Timing is an issue, arm lags at times, hips will fly open, will lose release point. Despite some timing issues, it's a fluid operation and his athleticism shows in how easily he finds velo. Incredibly fast worker, moving through at bats at a rapid fire pace. This trait almost certainly works to the determinant of his strike throwing.

Fastball: Has been up to 97 mph in the past from the left side, averaging 94.5 mph at 2020 instructs. He has an above-average release height at six feet and gets average extension on the pitch. His average spin is in the 2300-2350 range but it's inefficient and he doesn't get much rise on the pitch. He cuts it predominantly but will get some run on his best fastballs. It's double plus velocity for a left-handed starter and plus for left-handed reliever so the pitch will play despite below average movement. Improved command of the pitch is needed, it's around the zone but he consistently misses spots. Grade: 50

Curveball: Olivarez's best swing and miss pitch based on 2019's observation with Grand Junction. Sits 76-79 mph with the pitch, getting moderate vertical drop and some late horizontal break. Spin rates in the 2500-2600 rpm range, but there's a fair amount of gyro spin limiting his vertical dump. Controls it when he's on, tending to be around the zone. That however was not the norm as he was prone to bouts of poor command of the pitch. Grade: 50

Changeup: Good velocity separation between the changeup and fastball with an average velocity of 82-83 mph. Doesn't do a good job of selling the pitch, despite good velocity separation and a strong ability to kill lift. Below average but there's some room for growth into fringe-average. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Olivarez's control and command came and went during his first season stateside. Inconsistency of his strike throwing was the defining characteristic of his control and command profiles. When he's on he'll spot his fastball and curveball for strikes, driving swings and misses. When he's off he misses badly to all parts of the plate with all of his pitches. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: An interesting arm in a system devoid of upside throwers. Plus velocity from the left side and the makings of a swing and miss pitch in his curveball. His changeup has some interesting elements, and projection but he has to improve his arm speed and deception on the pitch. Below average control and command overall hurts his ability to stick as a starter. However, there is one element of Olivarez's game that could easily be improved to boost his overall profile: Slow down. To watch Olivarez throw is a non-stop catch and throw session. His average pitch time was under 10 seconds in certain outings. If he could slow down to a moderate pace it might go a long way toward improving the profile. At present he looks like a fringe low-leverage reliever long term.

Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Draft - Round 4
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Tall, lean, high waisted, long levers, broad shoulders. Room to add some projection but not much. Major League ready body.

Delivery & Mechanics: Slight side-step to start mechanics, longer arm action, moderate leg lift and contraction, gets downhill and over frontside at release. Higher three-quarters arm action with lower release point. Falls off to first base side, struggles to repeat as he is often off balance at release. Leaks out early and will lose his release point and miss with his fastball.

Fastball: Sits 91-94 mph, touching 95-96 mph at peak, good velocity from a sub-six foot release point but an underwhelming movement profile. Lacks vertical and horizontal break, making it a truly straight fastball. He locates it more consistently in the upper quadrants than the lower and commands the pitch far better to his armside than gloveside. It's a pitch that worked versus collegiate and lower level hitters due to his velocity, but is less likely to fool the more advanced hitters of the upper levels. Mixes in a two-seam variation in a similar velocity band, but it's not that different from the four-seamer metrically or aesthetically. Grade: 40

Curveball: Variation of his slider with more vertical drop (-4 inches), with less velocity (77 mph avg) than his sweeper. Used against lefthanders, but will often bleed into his slider shape. Part of his repertoire and sequencing, but a clear step behind his other secondaries. Poor quality breaking ball, lacking the vertical drop to be effective as a swing and miss hammer. Grade: 30

Slider: Sweeper in the low-80s, average velocity of slightly above 81 mph with average spin rates in the 2500 rpm region. Minimal vertical movement with nearly a foot of sweeping break. Higher efficiency pitch, can miss bats, but is primarily a driver of weak contact, a fair amount that falls into the ground ball category. He'll deploy the pitch mostly against righthanders as it breaks away from the barrel. Prefering to utilize his changeup and curveball -- which is really a slider variation -- versus lefthanders. Below average command and fringe average control of the pitch, as with much of Feltner's arsenal he experiences bouts of losing complete control. Grade: 50

Changeup: Shows feel for the off-speed, supination profile, tilt slightly clockwise from his fastball. Inconsistent shape and infrequent use, but it is part of his plan of attack versus left handed batters. It lacks horizontal movement but he does a good job of killing lift and he sells the pitch with his arm speed. Good separation from fastball with an average velocity of 83-84 mph. His best swing and miss pitch. Despite some good elements it's still a third pitch he can lose feel for. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Borderline fringe-average control that doesn't consistently hold for large stretches. Feltner's lack of control and subsequent command leads to innings of hemorrhaging hard contact, balls, and runs. Feltner can be cruising and suddenly fall apart. His inability to repeat and his off balance follow through lead to strike throwing issues. The rub is he can go through the order once and look immaculate, locating his fastball to both sides of the plate and dashing sweepers across the plate. Then he loses any semblance of the zone. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: There's enough here for a relief profile as a fringe major league pen guy, likely settles in as a high end up and down role type. His combination of fastball velocity, a changeup that can generate swings and misses when needed, and a sweepy ground ball inducing slider give him a starter's look, but his poor command is a non-starter for that role long term. Feltner likely profiles best as multi-inning reliever or long man at this point, but substantial growth with his control and command will be needed.

Evaluator: John Calvagno

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 220 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Draft - Round 1
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Lavigne is long, broad shouldered and well put together. Stands 6-foot-4 220 pounds as listed and it looks accurate. He's close to maxed out physically but there may be room for an additional 5-10 pounds of good weight, particularly up top.

Hit: Moderate crouch, slightly open stance. Feet are shoulder width apart and the hands are above the shoulders. Pretty quiet in the box pre-pitch. He contracts and expands creating moderate load. The swing is on the long side and linear with above average bat speed. The ball comes off the bat pretty well when he squares it, which wasn't often. The bulk of the contact is down and to right center/left center. The approach is patient early in counts though I have seen him expand with two strikes, fishing for spin. Work to do with pitch recognition. Grade: 45

Power: Flashed substantial in game pop as an amateur and during his time in rookie ball. In game production came to a screeching halt in 2019. Posted a .091 ISO in Asheville in, and never looked fully comfortable at the plate. The raw power he shows in batting practice is plus but he's not set up to tap into it. Lavigne might be a candidate for a swing change, but his passivity at the plate sees him passing on pitches he could drive. Grade: 45

Field: An average first base profile, with clean receiving and the ability to stretch for outs. Right handed throwing isn't ideal for the position, and the body could get worse, but has handled first base well professionally. Grade: 50

Arm: Below average arm but shouldn't be stretched too thin at first base. Doesn't get much zip or on-line carry. Did play some third base and outfield in high school but max velocity throws were 77 mph. Grade: 30

Run: Big bodied station to station mover poor runner overall. Not an asset on the base paths. Grade: 30

Overall: I was excited to see Lavigne in the hitters haven that is Asheville in 2019. I observed Lavigne over 50 at bats that summer. He's big and imposing with above average bat speed and occasionally the ball would really explode off of his bat. Too often though it was soft grounders and liners, hence the .091 ISO. The raw tools are here to really impact a baseball but he'll have to do so consistently to make it as a first base only player. Swing change candidate with a heavily passive plate approach.

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 204 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Long, lanky, and athletic, body of a centerfielder with positive projection remaining in the frame. Should be able to add 10-15 lbs of muscle with little issue in the coming years.

Hit: Sets up square to the pitcher with slight bend in his knees, and probated front foot. Hands set by ear, closes off front side pre-load. Clean stroke, doesn't get significant drive from his lower half. Engages lower body with toe tap timing mechanism. Will swing early in counts, needs to work on approach at the plate. Raw bat to ball skills are above average, average bat speed, but poor pitch recognition leads to contact on the wrong pitches. Makes lots of weak flyball contact, best struck balls are screaming liners up the middle. Needs to add strength or improve potential inefficiencies in his swing. Grade: 45

Power: Good bat angle and optimized bat path leads to a high percentage of flyball contact. Lacks strength at point of contact to do damage at present. This lack of power leads to a lot of easy outs in the mid-outfield. The addition of strength or improved swing mechanics could boost this to an average grade in a year's time. Grade: 40

Field: Moves well in center, solidly average reads off of the bat. Has the makeup speed to handle the position and was sure handed across a dozen observations in 2019. Grade: 50

Arm: Fringe-average arm, enough to make the cut off throw but not a rifleman that will pick off runners at third from mid-centerfield. Grade: 45

Run: Home to first full effort in the 4.1 to 4.2 range. Shows the ability to cover ground in centerfield and has the makeup speed needed for the position. May lose a step as he adds muscle. Grade: 55

Overall: An average fielder and below average hitter with some projection remaining. There's a chance Montano adds strength and gets into his game power and pushes into a fringe everyday role. As currently constituted he's nestled between emergency depth and platoon outfielder. We'll lean the former until he can raise both his hit and power grades to average.

Age: 27 yr
Height: 6-2

RuleV: On 40-man

Physical Description: Solid, compact frame. Good size to upper and lower half. Sturdy build with narrow torso. Shorter in height, but has strong arms and legs. Uses many components of his body within his swing.

Hit: Open right-handed stance. Legs and hips wide to the plate. Stands tall in the box. Notable left leg kick within his stance. Hands and shoulders stay connected throughout his swing. Above-average hit tool with solid contact to all fields. Stays back on the ball. Finds spots to sneak hits past infielders. Makes good contact on pitches high in the zone. Struggles low and away. Patient approach, waits for his pitch and attacks. Tendency to stay in the count, gets on base consistently. Grade: 55

Power: Well below-average power in his swing. Makes softer contact, doesn't barrel the ball for extra-base hits. Struggles to pull the ball for power. Fits the profile of a contact-oriented hitter. Very little power present, needs improvement. Grade: 30

Field: Above-average outfielder with strong arm and instincts. Makes good routes to the ball in center and right field. Makes up a good amount of ground with his speed. Noteworthy mental errors, doesn't play the ball correctly. Has the defensive prowess to stick in center or right field long term. Grade: 55

Arm: Powerful arm that zips past the outfield. Nabs baserunners from center and right field. Strong arm meets home plate on one or two hops. Good accuracy and velocity. Makes the necessary throws to keep baserunners from advancing. Sound mechanically with a quick arm gets online carryon throws to the infield. Grade: 60

Run: Above-average speed with quick bursts and acceleration. Runs well out of the box. Very aggressive base stealer, but lacks top-end speed. Uses his speed to makeup errors defensively. Must improve timing and discipline to make the most of his base-stealing ability. Grade: 55

Overall: Signing with the Rockies as an international free agent in 2010, Daza made his big league debut last season in large part to his speed and defensive ability. He has a strong arm and good instincts to play right or center field, but his bat lacks hard contact and power. Has the tools to play a bench role but nothing more. Lacks power to make an impact or elite defensive skills to be a true fourth outfielder, defensive replacement. An up and down profile.

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 235 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 Draft - Round 4
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Average height with strength throughout build. Not an athletic build, lacks projection, even improved conditioning would likely only lead to moderate gains. Bulky upper body, barrel chested, long term first base body.

Hit: Above average bat to ball contact, with line drive focused path. Open setup, up on front toe, hands set by ear flap, trigger starts from high leg lift timing mechanism. Swing is somewhat long but he does get excellent extension, hips fire slightly late, pushing a lot of contact to the middle-oppo side. His contact ability is boosted by his steep vertical bat angle at the point of contact, which keeps his launch angle variance tight. This characteristic is one of the reasons Welker has continued to run high contact rates at every stop (2017: 83.5% 2018: 77.3% 2019: 80.7%). Fringe average approach and pitch selection skills, is an aggressive swinger, but the swing and miss is offset by his strong contact skills. Grade: 55

Power: Fringe average power. Doesn't produce much lift and best contact is line drives stung up the middle. Exit velocities sit around league average, but lacks high max velocities. Slugging numbers are mostly boosted by lots of hard doubles to the gap and down the line. Likely will top out at mid-teen home run power with a fair amount of doubles. Grade: 45

Field: Below average defender at third base due to lack of lateral quickness. Lacks sufficient range for the position, despite clean infield actions and good hands. Has an outside shot at moving to second base long term with a shift happy club, but likely moves to first base full time. Average at the first base position, moves well enough around the bag with clean stretches. Grade: 40

Arm: Above average throwing arm, makes all the needed throws at third base. Accuracy is inconsistent on rushed throws. Mechanically sound, generates the needed carry. Grade: 55

Run: Well below average to poor runner, lacks quickness out of the box and is station to station on the bases. Speed is not part of Welker's game. Grade: 30

Overall: An interesting bat but a player with limitations that drag down the overall profile. Perhaps Welker carves out a niche as a second division regular at first base, but his lack of power typical for the position gives me pause. He hits left handed pitching slightly better than right handed and has shown he can hit for impact in left on right matchups. He lacks the defensive chops to project long term at any position outside first base and is already rule five eligible. His most likely outcome is a part time platoon role with an outside shot to carve out an everyday role at first base, particularly if he's able to add loft and generate harder flyball contact.

Physical Description: Tall and sturdy right-hander on the mound. Has good size and length. Strong upper half, broad shoulders. Long arms and legs. Fairly solid build. Near full maturity, limited room for growth and muscle. Uses his lower half well in his delivery.

Delivery & Mechanics: Standard three-quarter slot delivery from the right side. Good mechanics and arm action. Simple and repeatable. Slow and methodical windup, glove reaches the top of his head before the pitch. Lower half incorporated in delivery.

Fastball: Low-to-mid 90s fastball with good late life. Has some sinking action low in the zone, creates soft contact. Sits 91-95 mph, has touched 95 mph on occasion. Gets nearly 11 inches of horizontal run in his four-seam. Above average spin in the 2350 rpm zone. Will get swings and miss on the pitch with consistency to right handed batters. Lands well to his armside. Grade: 50

Curveball: Low-80s pitch that needs improvement. Not thrown as much to his slider. Shows solid depth, but lacks consistency. Stays high and flat, gets barreled in the zone. Needs more reps and 12-6 movement for improvement. Grade: 40

Slider: Mid-80s offering with solid break and horizontal movement. Good tunneling to hide his fastball. Late break against righties/lefties. Forces whiffs and late swings. Gyro spin with average spin rates in the 2500-2600 rpm range. Go-to off-speed pitch, throws it with confidence. Above-average pitch with good velocity and break. Grade: 55

Changeup: Mid-80s changeup that needs development. Lacks fade and tumble. Stays firm, hangs in the zone. Rarely thrown last season. Good velocity when thrown, but lacks late movement. Additional reps could help development into fourth pitch. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Has shown above-average control with solid mechanics and consistency to find the zone. Spots his sinking fastball low and inside for called strikes. Uses his slider as an effective strikeout pitch. Rarely issues walks, stays in the count. Tendency to leave pitches towards the middle of the plate, and struggled with command overall. Lacks overpowering velocity, but places his pitches well. Control: 50 | Command: 40

Overall: A second round pick by Colorado in 2014, Ryan Castellini showed signs of consistent improvement during his big league debut last season. His fastball lacks elite velocity, but has good late sinking action to force soft contact. He complements it with a slider that has good depth and break. His changeup and curveball need improvement, but his above-average command masks his lack of raw stuff. With continued development, Castellini can be a potential back-of-the rotation starter.

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-4

Acquired: 2020 Draft - Round 3
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Tall, lanky southpaw with long legs and a shorter upper body. Higher, broad shoulders that lack thick muscle. Stronger core though there's room for additional muscle.

Delivery & Mechanics: Up tempo thrower that will mix up timing. Higher three quarters arm action, crossfire finish, wraps his fastball. Drop and drive resulting in an average release height in the neighborhood of 6 feet or slightly under. NQuick tempo down the mound with an accompanying arm speed that suggests more velo may come with added strength. Noted gains in recent instructional league appearances, and added velocity. Needs to do a better job of getting over his frontside at release.

Fastball: Sat 90-94 mph at Clemson, but averaged reported velocity during instructional league was up to 94.5 mph on average. Gets a fair amount of lift and rise but less so than he did at Clemson, getting more run (-11 hMov) and over 26.5 inches of absolute movement on average. A reworked pitch that's improved velocity and overall movement. Ability to command the-reworked pitch is paramount, as it's borderline plus metrically, he needs to slightly improve his efficiency to gain more lift. Grade: 55

Slider: Weatherly's go to secondary, two-plane break, getting both vertical and horizontal movement. Used effectively to nullify left handed batters and right handed batters. Heavily used part of his arsenal as his changeup is used just 5% of the time or less. More sweepy than gyroscopic in movement around 50% efficiency giving more slurvy shape. Put away pitch at Clemson. Grade: 55

Changeup: Reworked his changeup over the summer, newer offering and it wasn't used with frequency during instructs, but it did show some positive traits, like 15+ inches of horizontal break. He does a fair job of killing lift, but is still learning feel and command for the pitch. Showing positive signs of an improved third offering, but very much a work in progress. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Fastball command remains a concern. It will be critical if Weatherly is to succeed at the next level. Slider is very good, but will need fastball to find the zone consistently for it to be the weapon it's capable of being against good hitters. Needs the ability to set up his put away pitch by getting ahead early in counts. Good arm and mechanics suggest better command could come. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: A lefthander with improving velocity on his fastball, good movement, and a strong put away pitch, Weatherly has a chance to start, and much of his long term success may come down to his ability to do one of two things. Master the feel for his reworked offspeed, and gain the confidence to attack with it in game. Or he must improve his control and command to an average level. Weatherly has some quirks mechanically but he repeats fairly well, it's a matter of getting over his frontside more at release.

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 205 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 Draft - Round 2
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Strong, well-proportioned physique with some positional versatility thanks to athleticism. Wide shoulders with lean strength. Upper body more developed than lower body. Room for muscle in quads and thighs. Long arms with general room for muscle across the board.

Hit: Wide stance with low hands and a slightly angled hips. Very minimal stride. Swing can be a little handsy, lacking much wrap. Contact-oriented approach lacking power, though potential to impact the ball exists in frame. Ideal VBA does lead to good launch angles, though bat speed could improve with mechanics. Contact-oriented hitter with line drive approach to all fields and short barrel path. Good feel for the strike zone and ability to manipulate the barrel. As it stands, he's a hit over power guy with a good hit floor of a guy that should draw his walks and get on base. Grade: 50

Power: Certainly a hit-over-power guy that lacks coil and wrap. Bat speed lacks because of mechanical inefficiencies. Bat path is promising, though without some tinkering to current leverage, the ceiling is limited. There's fringy power in the body and bat path should adjustments be made. Grade: 45

Field: Soft hands and a quick transition at third base. Positional versatility suggests he could handle second base or even left field if necessary. Quick reactions and strong lateral mobility suggest he should have no problem sticking at third base so long as the bat impacts enough to keep him there. Grade: 55

Arm: Great, fluid arm action with plenty of strength. Very easy, comfortable. Accuracy has never been an issue. History of pitching helps support his profile as strong-armed corner guy. Grade: 60

Run: Fringy runner with some lumber to his frame out of the box. Gets out of the box well, but takes some time to get up to speed. Has a bit of a second gear as he rounds a base. Should the body get bigger to add power, could fall a grade. Grade: 45

Overall: Schunk is a professional hitter with a good approach at the plate and a slick defender at third base. There's some questions as to which direction his body will go and how potent the impact could be in the bat. As it stands, it's a utility floor with good on-base skills and a late-inning defensive asset.

Evaluator: Joe Doyle

Age: 18 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 160 lbs
Hits/Throws: B/R
Acquired: 2019 IFA
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Lean infielder with sneaky strength in hands and wider shoulders for his frame. More strength and impact is coming. Strong lower half and thicker hips suggest impact strength is coming.

Hit: Switch-hitter with more bat speed from the right side. Strong, closed-bodied stance with opposite field approach. Plenty of coil and quick hands at the plate. Already an impressive offensive-player. Plenty of impact to the gaps from both the left and right side of the plate. Can be a little aggressive especially against advanced breaking pitches. Handles the low pitches better than most his age, in part due to a steep VBA. Promising hit tool. Grade: 50

Power: More power from the right side thanks to bigger bat speed and more leveraged approach. Lift-oriented swing from the right side, with more limited power pull side from the left side. May end up right-handed full-time. Approach, again, limits impact, especially from the right side. Plenty of raw power in the body here. Grade: 45

Field: Good, not great defender with fluid actions to his left and right. Hands are a bit inconsistent and footwork needs time to develop and clean up. Game has a tendency to speed up on player. Grade: 45

Arm: Plenty of arm strength, though accuracy has come into question at shortstop. May end up at second or third base long term if player can't slow the game down. Arm could also play in a corner. Grade: 55

Run: Good runner with athletic stride. Body suggests his current solid-average grade may fall into the more average range. More strength and body to come. Could be a base stealer at the next level thanks to good burst. Grade: 50

Overall: Amador is a guy to watch over the next few years as his body catches up to his already impressive offensive tools. He probably levels out closer to 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, in which case the offensive impact could be substantial. There's questions where he'll end up on the diamond, though the bat will carry his value regardless.

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 Draft - Round 4
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Tall and lean with long levers. Lanky with some room for physical projection. Could easily handle 15 more pounds of good muscle.

Hit: Long-limbed but keeps things synced up. Shows the ability to drive balls thrown in the inner third, especially fastballs. Flashes average coverage of the plate. Will chase pitches up in the zone, especially the high fastball. He frequently struggles to recognize spin and will get fooled especially with breaking stuff away. Draws his fair share of walks and works his fair share of deep counts. Grade: 40

Power: Struggles to hit for power to all fields, is at his best when he can launch balls to the pull side where he gets to his power to play. Does show the ability to lift the ball, and doesn't just rely on bat-speed or raw strength to access power. The plan to get to the power is simple, jump fastballs that are thrown on the inner third. When he does jump on one he shows good power and can take the ball out of any ballpark. Grade: 55

Field: As a professional, he has spent most of his time playing center field but may have to move into a corner. In a corner, he has more than enough lateral agility and makes good reads off the bat that he could be an above-average defender there. Lacks the overall athleticism to play centerfield on a consistent basis at the major league level. If he fills out he will definitely have to move to a corner where his arm will play. Grade: 50

Arm: Arm is more than enough to play any outfield spot. He makes accurate throws and gets the ball in quickly. The throws have good arch and carry, and he can from time to time deliver a dart when needed. Grade: 50

Run: He is a good, not great runner. He has a quick stride that he uses well. He has solid baserunning instincts. Has a good understanding of when to tag up and when not to. Rarely gets caught stealing and has good jumps when he goes to steal. Grade: 50

Overall: As things stand he is closer to a role player than a major league regular. He can play in center but is better in a corner. Will show some power and some speed but lacks the hit tool to be a consistent major leaguer. At his best he is a fourth outfielder with slight upside for a low end regular.

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Tall broad-shouldered frame with room for plenty of projectable muscle and good weight. Should add 15-20 lbs naturally as he matures. Has some quick twitch athleticism and looks as though his physique should require little maintenance over time.

Hit: Showcased a mature approach and above average bat to ball ability as a 19 year old in the Pioneer League. He sets up with a slightly open stance, employing an accentuated leg lift trigger, before drawing his hands back in load. Displays above average bat speed and at least average control of the barrel. A little tilt in his torso as he starts separation, handsy, but he does a good job of firing his hips and staying on time. Above average plate approach for a teenager. Will work counts, spoil off pitches on the black and rarely strikes out. Above average bat to ball skills exemplified by his 77% contact rate in 2019. Still has yet to be exposed to high level pitching, with some mechanical quirks he could have issues with advanced spin. Should he prove otherwise he bumps half a grade. Grade: 45

Power: Average power, has shown the ability to drive the ball deep to all parts of the field. Best contact comes in the form of screaming line drives to his pull side. Plus bat speed, and a projectable muscular frame hint to untapped power upside. For now he shows the ability to turn on pitches on the inner half and punish mistakes. Has shown power in game across multiple stops. Grade: 50

Field: Athletic defender with the ability to develop into a difference maker at the corner. Moves well laterally with a quick first step and sound technical footwork. His hands are average and inconsistent, making a great play and following up with a poor scoop or transfer. It shows flashes of an above average profile, but as a 19 year old in advanced rookie ball it still has a ways to go to fully manifest. Grade: 50

Arm: Strong throwing arm with accuracy across the diamond. Gets good zip on off balanced throws and runners. Good mechanics, keeps shoulders square to target with quick arm speed. Grade: 60

Run: Above average runner at present that will flirt with plus home-to-first times. Likely to lose as step as he ages and adds some bulk. Shows inconsistent instincts at times in the bases. Has a tendency to become over aggressive as a runner. A squarely above average runner for now. Grade: 55

Overall: A tooled up talent and one of the better prospects in the lower levels of the Colorado system. A bat that blends above average contact and average power with a projectable long term defensive role. There's certainly a fair amount of risk attached to the profile, as Carreras is yet to see full-season ball. It's hard to ignore the package of skills that can produce a legitimate everyday player. However, there's still a significant amount of growth needed before we can comfortably project an everyday outcome.

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 195 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/L
Acquired: 2108 Draft - Round 1
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Tall broad shouldered lefthander. Good strength in upper half with some projection remaining in his lower half. Athletic mover on the mound, soft body should require maintenance long term.

Delivery & Mechanics: Athletic delivery, lower half moves gracefully from side step to full extension. Starts wind up with side step, quick leg lift and slight pause before fire. Arm raises during pause and prior to drive and extension. Higher three-quarters to over-the-top arm slot, makes for a higher release point, slight crossbody finish. Does a good job of repeating, some stress at the point of release but overall a lower effort operation.

Fastball: Rolison's average fastball sits around 90-92 mph and will touch 94-95 mph at its hottest. Average spin rates in the 2200-2300 range, and an induced vertical break of 17.2 inches. Metrically it's a fringe average fastball, but Rolison's ability to control and command the pitch allows it to settle in at an average grade overall. Works both sides of the plate and has the ability to work north to south. Velocity plays up due to above average extension of six feet eight inches. Grade: 50

Curveball: The best pitch in Rolison's arsenal. The secondary he has the greatest feel for and the pitch he goes to most frequently in two-strike counts. A near 11-5 spin direction with -8 inches of induced vertical break. Good velocity at 79-82 mph. Above average to plus raw spin rates in the 2800+ range. Command is above average, will get slurvy at times and will be prone to hangers. Release differential is noticeable from other pitches. It's a plus pitch based on feel and movement. Grade: 60

Slider: Heavy gyro spin pitch with little to no vertical or horizontal movement. Used as third pitch mostly versus lefthanders. Harder than the curveball at an average velocity of 82-85 mph, with a lower spin rate of 2100 rpms. Has feel for the pitch and will land it for strikes. Clearly behind his curveball. Grade: 40

Changeup: Rolison will land the pitch for strikes versus righthanders with regularity. Minimal run but he kills lift and spots it well, selling the pitch with arm speed. Not a great changeup but a usable pitch in the lefthander's arsenal. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Rolison has been a consistent strike thrower since his junior season at Mississippi. This trend has continued in pro ball where his 7.2 BB% over 160 professional innings tells the tale. Possesses above average command of his fastball and curveball combination and his changeup shows average feel. His command issues manifest less in missing the zone and more so in missing up in the zone. Not surgical but above average control and average command. Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: Coming off of his junior season at Ole Miss many believed Rolison had the potential for three above average or better pitches with a starter's command profile. While some of that is true, his fastball is truly just average and his curveball is his only consistently above average offering. He throws strikes, gets ahead in counts, generates a fair amount of swing and miss and works efficiently. It's a starter profile with little question. How his movement profile and average fastball play in Colorado is another story. Without question I'd be more excited about Rolison's potential in a more progressive pitching organization.

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 210 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2020 Draft - Round 1C
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Strong, athletic build on medium-large frame; strong throughout with good bulk while remaining athletic. Body still will likely change and reshape to a degree, close to physically maxed.

Hit: A switch-hitter who has shown the ability to impact the ball from both sides, Romo's swing, bat speed, and raw power all shine brightest from the left side of the plate. There's some barrel adjustability there at present along with good rhythm and tempo, hit tool likely falls short of average projection long term. Should be able to hit from both sides at passable level to dissuade platoon impact, though the likely best outcome is strong side platoon bat. Grade: 40

Power: Has the makings of plus raw power long term, strength already shows out in BP, can loft the ball out to the pull side from either side of the plate, shows more overall and whole-field power projection from the left side. Creates leverage and allows strength to play, overall hit tool projection does limit some of the game power upside, should still be capable of driving 15-18 home runs annually, raw power grade is higher than game power here. Grade: 50

Field: Romo's calling card throughout his prep days and into the draft was definitely the defense, viewed as assuredly the best prep catcher in the class. Very athletic behind the plate with the requisite lateral agility to be an asset, explosive in lower half both laterally and out of crouch to throw down. Feel for receiving and blocking stands out, potential high-end defender behind the plate. Grade: 60

Arm: Romo's raw arm strength is easily plus, with explosive online carry out of the hand and the athleticism/timing skills to match the plus arm strength with a lightning-quick release, allowing him to control running games and shut them down, essentially. With consistent pop times south of 2.00 seconds in multiple looks across multiple events, it's easy to envision Romo having one of the better catch-and-throw games in baseball long term. Grade: 60

Run: Presently below average runner with flashes of fringe-average times down the line, speed will not be a part of Romo's game long term, though he's athletic and heady enough to take extra bases when possible and won't be amongst the proverbial "base cloggers". Grade: 40

Overall: Defense-first backstop with moderate offensive upside, Romo's bat profiles enough to project him as a first division regular, though it'll likely hold him back from being an All Star-caliber player. Something along the lines of peak James McCann seems like his high end outcome, with the catch-and-throw standing out amongst the rest of the profile, though Romo does have more offensive ceiling long term. Potentially very strong defender at premium spot with enough offense to keep him out of the 9-hole. Will need to prove he can hit professional pitching before we're willing to slap an everyday role on Romo.

Evaluator: Rhys White

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-5
Weight: 226 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/L
Acquired: 2019 Draft - Round 1
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: High waisted and lean with a frame that has room to fill out. Tall at 6-foot-5, but proportional and athletic. Similar build to an NBA swingman.

Hit: A switch-hitter who's left-handed swing is farther along than his right-handed swing, but not far enough behind that he should scrap switch-hitting. From both sides of the plate, he has a quiet set-up with a toe-tap before he looks to make contact. He has an understanding of the strike zone but does a below average job recognizing pitches out of the hand. His ability to track spin is good. Draws his fair share of walks and rarely expands the strike zone, especially from the right side. A majority of his contact is grounders, which is less than ideal for a power hitting first baseman. His left-handed swing is more oriented towards hitting for power than his right-handed swing, which can be attributed to his bat-path being more choppy as opposed to the left-handed swing's bat-path being more conducive to line-drives and lofting the ball. Tends to keep things simple, will look to spray the ball up the middle with the occasional pull-side blast. Grade: 45

Power: He generates power from a good base, quick enough bat-speed, and average loft to his swing. He will show some opposite field power from his left-handed stroke but not as often as you may like. From the right, power is a bit harder to come by for him. He does as things stand hit more hard line-drives towards the pull side but he will hit some fly balls that will go out. He shows the requisite bat-speed that with some swing path adjustments could unlock even more power. Grade: 55

Field: Mostly a first baseman, he is an asset defensively there. He is athletic enough to play a corner outfield position. He moves well for a first baseman, athletic and fluid around the bag. He does a good job of holding runners on, and scoops the ball well. Sets an easy target for fielders to throw to get the out at first. He is very skilled and can move left to right, good range for first base. Grade: 50

Arm: Like previously mentioned he can go out and play a corner outfield spot, and he has the arm to do so. In college he would show an accurate arm that had good carry. His arm could be helpful in the infield as a cut-off guy. Grade: 50

Run: He isn't a great runner. He gets out of the box well but underway his gait is clunky, looks to be landing more with his mid foot as opposed to being on his toes. He gets down the line just fine but as he fills out he will lose some of that agility, which admittedly is just fine. Grade: 45

Overall: Toglia has what it takes to be a good solid major league first baseman. He combines an above average glove with some feel for power from the left side. He can cameo as a corner-outfielder but that probably won't happen too often. He needs to work on his right-handed swing in order to continue switch-hitting at the higher levels of the minors. An average regular at first base with some platoon concerns versus left-handers.

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 226 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Draft - Round 2
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Well put together, ideal shortstop build. He will not wow you physically. There is a little room for more muscle on the frame, but that may come at the expense of some lateral quickness. Not overwhelmingly athletic but shows an understanding of the game.

Hit: Makes consistent contact with a short and compact swing. Tends to keep things simple looking to stay in the middle of the park but on the right pitch will pull the ball. Shows good hand-eye coordination and has a short compact swing. While not elite he shows an average ability to track spin, and lay off pitches. Shows a good understanding of the strike zone and will be patient and not force anything at the plate. Goes up there with a plan, barely looks fooled by breaking balls. Looks to be hunting fastballs, and when he sees one on the inner third will turn on it. He has enough bat speed that there will be no concerns as to whether or not he can catch up to premier velocity. Shows good body control, never swings out of shoes, and has the requisite and eye coordination to make contact consistently. Above average hit tool. Grade: 55

Power: In batting practice, he will show all fields power but that is rare. His current game swing lacks any discernible loft, he is trying to hit line-drives in the gap. He has the requisite pitch recognition and bat-speed to tinker with adding more loft, however. Most of his homers come from balls that he turned on and pulled, where he shows average power, nothing that points to plus long term. For the most part, he shows doubles power which will allow him to rack up extra-base hits with well-hit balls in the gaps. If he can tinker with his bat path he can unlock more power in the future, as things stand he projects to have fringe-average power. Grade: 45

Field: Having played across the infield Vilade has some versatility. He can play SS, 3B, and 2B. He is good enough to stay on the left side because of his lateral agility. He isn't anything special at short. He has no trouble going to his right and left to get balls in the whole. He can make all the routine plays at short but profiles best at third. More of a range issue than a hands or actions problem. Not sure how the organization views his defensive home long term. Taking reps in the outfield during fall instructs, there has been talk of moving him to the grass long term. Grade: 45

Arm: He makes all the throws, balls have good carry and he is accurate when he throws to first. Mechanics look good, can throw on the run, when charging in. Arm is good for anywhere on the left side of the infield. Lacks plus zip and carry, but an average tool for the position. Grade: 50

Run: He is an average runner, who gets the most out of his speed because of his great base running. He is a short-strider who gets to top speed very quickly. Could be a potential double-digit stolen base guy thanks to his outstanding baserunning instincts. Grade: 50

Overall: He is a moderately safe major leaguer as things stand. No aspect of his game is outstanding but he is a sum of all his parts. No eye-popping tools but he can play anywhere on the left side of the infield and be a big-league. He will be an average major league hitter who will draw his fair share of walks and have below average power output. He will spray the ball in the gaps, and steal his fair share of bases. There are the ingredients for an average major leaguer with upside for slightly more. In the end his lack of power and possible defensive switch leaves some lingering concerns about his ability to reach everyday status.

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 217 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Draft - Round 2
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Broad-shouldered, physically mature build, maxed out body, but good physique should maintain long term with some normal conditioning. Good pitcher's build with strength throughout.

Delivery & Mechanics: Easy operation, with minimal moving parts, slight side-step, moderate leg lift, with a front-side close off pre-handbrake. Generates good drive from his back leg with minimal effort throughout his delivery. Three quarters arm action, longer arm stroke, not the most natural arm motion, with sub-six foot release point. Clean mechanics, repeatable motion, with minimal deception.

Fastball: Average pitch, the four-seam sits 91-95 mph touching 97 mph at peak, fringe average vertical movement on the pitch, with a very pedestrian movement profile, averaging in the neighborhood of 16 vMov, 9 hMov, from a 1:30 tilt. It's a high efficiency fastball, but the generic tilt and lack of plus velocity from a right handed starter make it just an average offering that plays heavily off of the changeup. Would need to add 2-3 mph in velocity and alter the tilt closer to 1:15 to maximize efficiency in order to really overcome it's current average state. Grade: 50

Slider: Above average pitch, transitioned from a cutter to a more traditional slider following the 2019 season. Good velocity in the 82-85 mph range with gyro spin and slight drop and sweep. It breaks off his changeup while doing a similar job of killing lift. It's a swing and miss pitch and gives him a true secondary weapon. Command still comes and goes, and he will still manipulate his grip to get more cutter action at slightly elevated velocity. It's fringe-plus. Grade: 55

Changeup: Elite pitch, sold with good arm speed and mimicked fastball release. Does an excellent job of killing vertical lift, and generates nearly 17 inches of run on average. He's a heavy pronator, getting near screwball-like movement on the pitch. Can almost be categorized as a reverse slider. It dominates left-handed batters running off the plate when thrown to the middle of the zone. Has a 12-15 mph separation on fastball and changeup sitting 79-82 mph. One of the best pitches in the organization. Grade: 70

Control and Command: Consistent strike thrower, shows the ability to pound the zone with all three pitches. Has the ability to manipulate his slider, working in his former cutter grip to give batters a different look the second time through. Very good command of his fastball, throwing it effectively to all four quadrants. Historically had been an average strike thrower heading into the spring of 2020, but took a step forward into plus or better territory with his partial season performance. Walked just five batters across 25 innings this spring. Control: 60 | Command: 55

Overall: A strong college track record was buoyed by improved stuff and strike throwing during his draft Spring, pushing McMahon into the top 50 on draft day. He features a true double plus weapon in his changeup with the metrics to back it, and pairs that with an above average slider he's begun to master his feel for. His fastball isn't bad, simply very average, but his control and feel for the pitch allow it to set up his secondary weapons with early count strikes. A backend starter profile with the body, mechanics, and secondaries to have a chance to push into mid-rotation territory.

Height: 6-4

RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Long, tapered build with seemingly limitless physical projection. Plus body with projection for plus-plus, broad shoulders with lean muscle throughout, chance to be a physical monster when he fills out fully.

Hit: Veen employs a loose, fluid stroke that generates plus bat speed with lots of natural loft, creating something of a picture-perfect, "pretty" left handed swing. It's a smooth hand load with a hint of a bar, and while there is some length through the launching mechanism, Veen's bat speed has allowed him to overcome that to date in his career. He employs a whole-field approach with a better, more mature eye at the plate than most of his peers. Unlikely to be a plus hit tool long term, but between OBP and power output, has the makings of a plus bat overall. Grade: 50

Power: Pretty special power projection given the projection on his body as well as the bat speed and present strength. Already shows plus raw power to the pull side, can loft balls a very long way in that direction as well as go out the opposite way. Swing is ideally built for power, matches planes well and can create lots of backspin, with continued physical development and strength gains, the upside of plus-plus raw power exists, with the game power ending up around plus. Could be a 30+ HR annually type of bat. Grade: 60

Field: Profiles well in right field long term given physical projection, athletic enough to be sent out in center field and see if he can stay there. Has solid instincts and reads off the bat, above-average runner once underway, eventual physicality likely forces him in OF corner, has the long-term athleticism and arm strength to be a solid right fielder. Grade: 50

Arm: Smooth arm stroke, looseness to it with quick release, above-average raw arm strength at present, has projection to the tool, some operational cleanup as well as the strength projection on the body as a whole could lead to a plus arm long term. Grade: 60

Run: Presently a solid-average runner who moves better once his long legs are underway, it's likely that Veen will slow down a half/full tick or so as his body continues to fill out. He won't be an athletic liability in the outfield or on the base paths, but it's unlikely that he'll consistently turn in average or better times down the line by the time he reaches the highest level. Grade: 45

Overall: Veen's offensive upside is vast, and in a perfect world he could be a 12+ type of bat if you combine the hit and power grades, though the most likely outcome is that of an average hit/plus power corner outfielder. The power upside combined with his willingness and ability to draw walks gives him an obviously enticing long term profile, and he could end up hitting 30+ home runs annually. Projects as a solid defender in an OF corner, but most of his value is tied to the bat.
