Evaluator: Matt Thompson

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 225 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 5
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Well built, physical prospect. Well developed frame with strength throughout. Big broad shoulders, strong biceps and forearms. Good base, big thighs and rear end. Built like a corner outfielder.

Hit: Swing built off strength and leverage. Looks for his pitch, and made a large approach change as he entered 2019 and it paid off. He doubled his walk rate while also upping the power numbers and slightly chipping away at the strikeout numbers. He struggles making consistent contact, and doesn't have a two-strikes approach. Not saying he needs one, but it's very much a power over hit profile with zero fear of striking out. Works counts, extremely patient hitter with good strikezone judgement. Pitch recognition skills are sound, but just struggles making contact. Overall hit tool is poor, but can be fringe average if you factor in approach. Was hit by an astonishing 32 pitches in 2019, which explains the massive OBP jump. Grade: 30

Power: Sutton's new approach at the plate also led to a jump in balls hit to his pull-side, which is by design. Power is his strong suit in the box and he leaned into that in 2019. Large, uppercut swing allows him to hammer balls low in the zone but he will struggle against the stuff that's up. Plus raw power and is the highlight of batting practice, but plays nowhere close to that level in games because of his swing and miss tendencies. Grade: 45

Field: Sutton is a poor fielder. He's a plus runner which allows him to get to so many balls, but he takes poor angles and doesn't have soft hands in the outfield. He's a future corner outfielder, and I do think he will improve with more reps. Grade: 40

Arm: Above-average arm. Good enough to allow him to play any OF spot. Iron glove pushes him to left. Grade: 55

Run: Plus runner, will play down as he continues to bulk up. Will steal around 10-12 bases in the big leagues. Grade: 60

Overall: Sutton is a really good athlete, physical yet agile, but he will be held back by a subpar hit tool. He's a plus runner with the raw strength to clear any park, Williams-Sutton is a high risk prospect due to the swing and miss, and don't get suckered into the inflated OBP due to an insane 32 HBPs in 2019. He projects as a reserve outfielder, and not one that can play a competent centerfield which raises the offensive bar.
