Mar 2021 Report

Evaluator: Joe Drake

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-7
Weight: 223 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 Round 3
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Huge, 6'7" frame with a high waist and long limbs. Broad, squared shoulders. Lean and muscled, but borderline skinny. Decent amount of projection left as he adds to upper torso, glutes and thighs. Visibly frustrated when he can't find the release; lets emotions from poor at bat outcomes spill into the next, overthrowing when he's mad and compounding his frustration. TJS in 2015, shoulder inflammation 2017, biceps issues and line drive off leg in 2019.

Delivery & Mechanics: Full windup; big leg kick to the letters, fires from 3/4s arm slot. Works through windup at quick pace. Medium length arm stroke, doesn't quite drop it all the way down behind the body. Fast arm. Decent separation, arm on time and possibly early. Short and quick from the stretch, abbreviated leg kick, rocking back and firing.

Fastball: 94-96, T99; Good ride and run, but inconsistent and gets flat. Gets squared up when it's flat in the zone, hitters jump on it. Runs it by hitters consistently at the top of the zone and induces pop-ups frequently. Goes away from it sometimes like he lacks confidence. Command comes and goes. Grade: 50

Curveball: Big, sharp breaker. Tunnels well with the fastball and mirrors it well, too, hitters struggle to recognize it out of the hand when it's tight - not tight that often. Can drop it in for a strike armside; uses it armside or buries it for chases. Loses feel for it and gets loopy. Grade: 45

Slider: Similar shape as curveball, more depth than sweep. Not a ton of depth, rolls more often than it bites. Thrown mostly gloveside, gets more bad contact than whiffs. Occasionally resembles more of a cutter than slider. Flashes plus, nasty when it's on, just not always on. Grade: 45

Changeup: solid tumble and fade but not consistent. Good armspeed. 4th pitch in both usage and quality. Lacks confidence and feel. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Decent control, typically around the zone with few erratic pitches. Doesn't pound the zone though and falls behind somewhat frequently. Too many first pitch balls. Goes through bouts of living in the zone and living just outside the zone. Command worsens from the stretch. Hitters take a little more easily than you would guess for someone who sits mid to high 90s - he's either tipping pitches or hitters are seeing the ball early. Pitches backward often. Control: 30 | Command: 30

Overall: Big, fireballing righty whose good stuff gets hit harder than you'd expect due to inconsistency and poor command. Everything flashes plus at times, but is hit hard far too often or sails to a noncompetitive location. To add insult to injury, he appears to lose his composure when things go awry which adds to his issues. Reports are that he has scrapped the changeup and dazzled out of the pen during instructs after being added to the 40-man. His ceiling is sky high if he can find some semblance of consistency and command, but it's a big if. With so far to go, it's most likely that he's an up and down guy at this time.
