Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Justin Lada

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-6
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Draft - Round CBA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Big, physical frame. Sizeable wingspan and legs. Thick lower half. Reports of softer body in 2019, but much leaner in 2020. Some room left for strength in frame, but will have to watch how much overall weight is added to the frame in order to maintain athletic build, get into the positions necessary to repeat his delivery, and make the most of his frame.

Delivery & Mechanics: Works first base side of the rubber with mid-section high leg kick. Stays stacked in his midsection and creates natural hip hinge. Gets into drive leg and uses lower half efficiently. Has improved front leg extension over 2020 and also didn't stay connected to the rubber consistently in 2019. In limited video from 2020, showed improved upper body posture that has created better shoulder/hip separation and gets his shoulders square to the plate before he drags his arm through his three-quarter arm slot. Arm slot did appear higher at times in 2019 with the curveball and arm speed was slower at times. Will throw in delay leg kick from the windup to disrupt hitters timing.

Fastball: 93-96, up to 98 with late, riding life. Spins is well (2400 RPM). Locates the pitch well up in the zone and to his armside better than glove side. Velocity, spin and late life gets swinging strikes in the zone. Tough for right handed hitters to handle up and in and as it runs away from left handers. Doesn't throw it in on left handers as much. Overall command keeps it from being a double-plus offering. Grade: 60

Curveball: 73-75 with a 12-6 shape drop. Has shifted from a steeper drop as an amateur to a tighter break. Shows good shape and depth. Arm speed appears to slow down at a times throwing it. Effective at shifting hitters eye levels. Comfortable throwing it to both sides of the plate to left handers. Added velocity could increase effectiveness. Average command. Grade: 45

Slider: 77-80. Late vertical drop and three-quarter arm slot creates wide, sweeping action to make it cross the entire plate. Has looked too similar to his curveball at times, but started to differentiate shape in 2019. Tunnels well with fastball. Average command to both sides of the plate. Has shown comfort in backdooring the pitch to left handers. Grade: 50

Changeup: 86-88. Sells it with consistent arm speed. Shows promising sink and fade. Arm speed and fade give it the potential to be his best secondary offering. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Below average fastball command but in the strike zone with it and velocity/movement allows him to get away with mistakes. Changeup command is ahead of breaking ball command. Improved shape and flexibility could help him repeat his delivery better and improve his command Control: 50 | Command: 45

Overall: Hankins has the build of a front line starter. Velocity as a prep was better before a reported shoulder injury. Hasn't had any reported injuries as a pro but velocity hasn't crept up into the upper-90s as expected. Worked into improved shape in 2020 and with better positioning and flexibility, that could come into play. Working 95+ consistently would be a game changer for Hankins in terms of his ceiling because he has below average fastball command and he can get away with misses in the zone with it now due to the life on it, but better velocity would give him a better chance to maintain that as he faces better hitters. There is mid to top of the rotation type stuff there but the consistency and command so far cast doubt on that ceiling. His fastball/slider/changeup arsenal give him the weapons to be an average major league starter and would work fine in a leverage bullpen role. His success hinges on his command and getting more consistent different shape from his curveball and slider, and shaping his curve into more of a power offering. Already physically gifted, Hankins is also a driven student of his craft and shows eagerness to take data and apply it to the mound to improve. Demands a lot of himself on the mound and is a fierce competitor.
