Aug 2021 Report

Evaluator: Joe Drake

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-5
Weight: 250 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2019 Round 4
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: XL frame with strong, thick build. Frame is maxed out, no projection remaining; conditioning may be a factor down the road. Broad shoulders, long limbs, strong thighs; power pitcher's build.

Mechanics: Stretch-only; high leg lift starts easy, drop and drive delivery. Longer arm action drops behind the body before coming through at a low-3/4s slot with above-average arm speed. Doesn't repeat that well. Stinson has a shorter stride for his size and as a result gets pretty average extension. Stride foot lands slightly to the first base side giving him a little crossfire action. Low-effort operation, overall.

Fastball: 91-94, T95. Low slot gives fastball solid run with some sink, as well. Looks to steal strikes against lefties by running it back over the plate gloveside, but often misses too far off the plate. Doesn't command it well, in general and gets squared up when left over the heart. Gives up more fly balls than you'd expect from a fastball with his sink. Lacks the zip it had in college and doesn't run quite as much. Grade: 50

Slider: 81-85; sweeper with 2-8 shape. Fringey bite with average movement; fairly consistent but does flash some sharper ones. Tries to steal backdoor strikes with it against righties and uses it for swing and miss gloveside against lefties. Below-average command of the pitch, often misses in non-competitive locations. Tunnels well off the fastball which helps it play up. This pitch is not what it used to be. Grade: 50

Changeup: 77-78; solid tumble with fade. Sells with armspeed, typically, but has a few where he tips it by slowing down. Inconsistent pitch that sometimes lacks depth and resembles a BP fastball. Not much feel; doesn't command well. Used against righties, but it's a liability and often gives up hard contact when left in the zone. Grade: 30

Control and Command: Okay strike thrower; not wild, but doesn't pound the zone. Walks a guy nearly every time he comes into the game. Mostly works east and west, looking to steal strikes on the corners. Doesn't command well to the gloveside, often missing off the plate. Not afraid to open ABs with non-fastballs. Appears to lack confidence in his stuff; often looking to fool hitters and steal strikes rather than challenging them; nibbles early and often and lacks the command to find the edges of the zone consistently. Control: 30 | Command: 20

Overall: Stinson is a big, strong left-hander whose stuff isn't what it used to be. His once live arm hasn't rebounded since his days at Duke and the fastball dips into the high-80s at times now with less run. The slider has fallen off the most and now lacks consistent bite, often rolling in and not fooling anyone. At present, the stuff is underwhelming and the command is poor, leaving the upside here for an up and down reliever for low-leverage innings against lefties. The floor is an org depth relief arm. There's a chance for more if he can find the next gear we saw back in college, but it's been a long time since we've seen it at this point.
