Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Anthony Franco

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 260 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 IFA (MIN)
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Listed at 6-4, 260. On-mound presence; tall, boxy frame. Physically developed, no remaining projection. Thick lower half with massive thighs.

Delivery & Mechanics: Works solely from the stretch; rare look for a starting pitcher but leads to atypical simplicity in his delivery. Throws with extremely little effort. Low 3/4 arm slot with a longer arm stroke; that combination of arm angle and long arm action give left-handed hitters a really long look at the ball before it leaves his hand.

Fastball: Works 90-93. Low arm slot not conducive to generating vertical hop on the fastball. Plays horizontally with what appears to be deliberate variation in the movement; can run it arm-side to jam right-handed hitters or cut it when working glove-side. Plays much better against righties. Grade: 45

Curveball: Fourth pitch in his arsenal. Has a little more bite than the slider but lacks traditional curveball depth. Grade: 45

Slider: Sweepy, mid-80's slider. Locates glove-side and down. Pitch has some two-plane movement but doesn't have the bite to miss many bats at higher levels. Grade: 45

Changeup: Advanced feel for vertically oriented changeup. Mimics fastball arm speed to aid deception and has enough drop to tumble below the barrel. Best bat-missing secondary. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Repeats delivery despite average athleticism because it's so simple. Can throw the fastball in the zone when needed to work back into counts. Advanced ability to locate secondaries down in the zone: changeup arm-side, slider glove-side. Fringe raw stuff might force him to nibble a little more against higher-level hitters but projects for plus control in a vacuum. Advanced understanding for reading hitters' swings and sequencing accordingly. Control: 60 | Command: 55

Overall: Teng's a pitchability right-hander acquired from the Twins as part of the 2019 Sam Dyson trade. Physical with a low-effort delivery, he should have a better chance than most pitchers to stay healthy. Other than an above-average changeup, his arsenal is just OK. Teng's fastball doesn't have the ride to get above barrels, and the breaking stuff is fringy. But he has good feel for the finer arts of pitching and throws plenty of strikes. He projects as a dependable back-of-the-rotation starter, particularly if the changeup allows him to handle left-handed hitters despite their favorable looks at his lower arm slot.
