Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 20 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 175 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 6
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Medium build with lean frame. Looks heavier than listed weight, but still has room to add some weight to the frame.

Hit: Slightly open stance, slight bend at the knees. Hands start at helmet height, bat rotates in a circle. Long stride for a wide base to start the swing process. Quick hands at the plate. Expands the zone and can struggle to recognize pitches. Grade: 30

Power: The quick hands will generate some gap power, but he likely will be limited to that. With his speed, the gap power can play. He showed the ability for occasional home run pop at the rookie level. Grade: 30

Field: His great speed and ability to read the ball of the bat make him a plus defender that can easily handle centerfield. Grade: 60

Arm: As a pitching prep he touched low 90's on the mound. To a degree that arm carries over to the grass. More than enough arm to stick up the middle. Grade: 50

Run: Short, quick strides. Quick twitch athlete means easy plus speed if not more. Grade: 60

Overall: Hilson shows a lot of athletic ability that mostly surfaces on the defensive side of the ball. It's a glove-first centerfield profile, but he'll have to improve with the bat in his hand to climb the ladder. He's the kind of player where it could all click at once. He's got more than enough ability to stick in center if his bat will allow him.

Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 22 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Round 2 FAC
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Smaller build, lacks much strength or athleticism. Not much room for physical projection.

Hit: Sets open; front leg offset, hands set by back shoulder. Quick, flat swing geared toward putting the ball in play on the ground. Rarely swings and misses and shows the ability to make contact with pitches all over the zone and on the fringes. Can hit velocity and faired well versus 95+ in college and on the Cape. Will need to make changes to setup to unlock any potential power, but it's a plus contact tool with a strong approach. Grade: 55

Power: Poor power tool, mostly a singles hitter without the ability to ambush fastballs. Flat bat path and lack of punch limit his power upside. Likely to max out in the high single digits in homers and high teens in doubles. Grade: 30

Field: Limited defender due to lack of quickness and twitch. Soft hands and strong actions makeup for a lack of tools. Parked at second base with no position fitting his profile. Below average defender with a lack of versatility. Grade: 40

Arm: Fringe-average arm, suitable for his likely position of second base. Can make consignment on target throws to first with some zip. Grade: 45

Run: Below average runner, not a base stealer, hustles out of the box but does not put pressure on the defense with his speed. Bad fit for his offensive profile. Grade: 40

Overall: A single tool player but it just so happens to be the most important. A bat-first prospect with a lack of power or speed. There's no doubt that Glowenke will hit, but will it be for the type of impact that's necessary in the modern game? If he's able to make adjustments, add strength, and unlock unforeseen power; there's potential he earns a role as a bat first second baseman. But without improvement in that area he's relegated to an up and down profile.

Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Tyler Henninger

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 180 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2014 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Looks bigger than listed weight. Strong, well built. Wide shoulders. Well-developed upper body with strength. Strong legs. Lacks flexibility and explosiveness. Still some room to add strength with continued development.

Hit: Slight open stance, hands high at the head. Upright upper body, slight bend in knees with feet a little wider than shoulder width. Minimal hand load with decent size leg kick timing mechanism. Average bat speed on a slight uppercut bat path. Above-average bat to ball skills, tough with two strikes. Line drive hitter. Pull-side approach, lacks ability to hit pitches hard on outer half of the plate. Aggressive hitter with well below-average discipline, leads to excessive amount of weak contact. Has shown slight discipline improvement, needs to continue. Doesn't recognize spin well, chases pitches. Bat to ball skills help make up for lack of discipline, but overall hit profile is still limited until approach improves. Grade: 40

Power: Above-average raw power, game power plays below average due to excessive amount of weak contact. Power mostly gap to gap, but shows some pull-side HR ability. Lacks loft to consistently put ball over the fence. Added strength and improved loft could lead to more power down the line. Grade: 40

Field: Sure handed defender who catches everything he gets to. Moves well both ways, but below-average jumps and speed limit range. Stiff body movements, lacks fluidity throughout fielding motion and running. Struggles catching GBs cleanly occasionally. Lacks range to make highlight reel play, but manages most routine ones. Fringy defender, possibly average with continued development. Grade: 45

Arm: Above-average arm with fringy mechanics. Short arm action. Lacks follow through and doesn't get body into throws. Still manages ideal carry. Around target frequently. Has shown ability to throw out runners. Grade: 55

Run: Average out of the box, but lacks burst and acceleration. Some stiffness in lower body, labors to run. Not a stolen base threat, but knows how to run bases. Below-average speed limits range, but still playable in OF. Grade: 40

Overall: Fabian lacks a stand out tool, but shows some decent attributes. With the bat, he has above-average bat to ball skills that make him a tough out with two strikes. While that helps him make a lot of contact, his approach still could improve. He struggles with spin and chases a fair amount which leads to frequent weak contact. Will he does show some pull-side power, although most of his power is gap to gap currently. If he is going to want to hit for more power, he'll need to continue to improve the loft in his swing. Fabian is a below-average runner who labors and has stiffness going down the line. It limits his ability to steal bags and impacts his ability to cover ground in the outfield as well. Although he lacks fluidity throughout the fielding movement, he still catches what he gets to and manages to make the routine play. His arm plays above-average with the ability to throw out runners, although his mechanics could improve. Fabian, overall, looks like an up/down player who could possibly develop into a below-average player with some improvements both offensively and defensively.

Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Jason Kamlowsky

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-5
Weight: 240 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 Round 17
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: This is a large human. Looks like he has slimmed down a bit from college. Naturally strong. High waisted and thick in his lower half, particularly in his hips and thighs. Upper body is far from being toned.

Hit: For a guy his size, he has a simple swing. Hands start high and the bat settles on his shoulder pre-pitch. Doesn't overstride or try to get big. Has shown propensity to go the opposite way with plenty of pop. When he gets his arms extended, he can do damage. There is a fair amount of swing and miss here. Doesn't walk much. Mostly a two-outcome hitter, but he understands what he is and attempts to capitalize on his strengths. Grade: 40

Power: Raw power is off the charts. He can muscle balls out of the park with ease. Raw power might be double plus and game power is plus. Simplified swing helps him go to all fields with pop. This is his best tool and will need to carry him. Grade: 70

Field: Moves surprisingly well for a kid his size. That said, his range is average at best. Will field balls hit right at him but isn't going to range over to the line or to his hand side. Pats his glove on his thigh before getting to the fielding position - a habit he needs to break. Probably best suited for a DH-role but could play 1B in a pinch. Grade: 30

Arm: Average arm strength. Throws from a low arm slot that takes some time on his release. Makes accurate throws to start double plays. Ball carries well enough across the diamond to be serviceable but playing first base means he will rarely make that type of throw. Grade: 40

Run: Below average, awkward runner. Stiff and upright when he runs, will struggle to score from second on a hit. Not a threat to steal. Grade: 30

Overall: Cannon has impressive raw power, probably the best in the Giants' system, but beyond that the tools are lacking. He hit 13 home runs in Rookie ball back in 2019 but he was 22 at the time, making him old for that level. He has the classic "long levers" for his size which is going to make it hard for him to maintain his power numbers as he advances. He is probably best served in a DH-role which will make breaking through that much more difficult.

Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Trevor Hooth

Age: 21 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 170 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 IFA (MIN)
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Medium build, sloping shoulders. Lean build. Some room left for projection on the frame.

Delivery & Mechanics: High 3/4 arm slot. Low effort delivery. Starts square to the plate. Hands at belt height, raise up to his neck at the height of the balance. Leg kick is stomach high. Bend in the back leg as he extends out toward the plate. Body tends to pull off as rotates to throw. Finishes tall with no leg kick on the follow through.

Fastball: 93-95 T98. Plays up in the zone, especially with two strikes. Creates weak grounders when spotting it low in the zone. He goes through spurts where the pitch is all over the place, then he can consistently place it on the corners. With the velo, it makes it a tough pitch. More control would make it plus, but it's still an above average offering. Grade: 55

Curveball: 82-84. 1-7 movement. Can be a swing and miss weapon low in the zone. He can lose control of it, but when locked in he utilizes it in any count. Shows confidence, even when down in the count. More consistency could make this an average offering, but as is it's fringe. Grade: 45

Changeup: Decent fade and deception. Not used often. Can work well low in the zone. Might grade higher if used more often. Grade: 30

Control and Command: Berroa's control is all over the place. He posted high walk numbers and hit a high amount of batters. There are stints where he's dialed in, but it's inconsistent. He doesn't miss over the middle too often, but he is liable to miss out of the zone by a lot. This will be a big part of how far he advances through the Giants organization. Control: 30 | Command: 30

Overall: Berroa is a power arm with a power fastball and a high velo curveball and the velo comes easy. The 1, 2 punch can be a real weapon. He has a changeup that he flashes too. The real story of his career will be written by his ability to reign in the control. His power arsenal will likely mean he thrives best in the bullpen, but he'd still need to see improvements in control.

Evaluator: Tyler Henninger

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 215 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 12
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Strong, well built. Large frame. Displays overall body strength. Wide shoulders. Muscular thigh and legs. Not body type to add much weight, mostly filled out.

Hit: Square stance, hands at the letters. Body upright with feet shoulder width apart. Recently simplified load. Semi-active hand load with some barrel wrap. Removed large hitch. Ditched large leg kick for small step with lower half. Average bat speed on slight uppercut path. Some barrel lag through zone. Uses the whole field well. Makes solid contact. Average bat to ball skills. Aggressive hitter, approach needs to improve. Swing and miss continues to get worse. Struggles with elevated velocity and spin on the outer half. Minimized load should help pitch recognition and contact frequency. Manages to still hit for decent average despite whiffs. Toned down load should help improve contact frequency. Possible fringe average hitter. Grade: 40

Power: Above-average raw power, game power plays more below-average due to contact issues. HR power mostly pull-side, more gap power the other way. Toned approach needed for hit ability may sap game power. Has a shown ability to drive ball in past, struggled to tap into it as a pro. Strength and contact quality indicate possibility of more power with maturity. Grade: 45

Field: Solid defender. Good hands, catches what he gets to. Footwork could improve, flat footed at times. Moves well both ways despite lacking a lot of lateral speed. Shows ability to charge ball well. Playable at 3B. Grade: 45

Arm: Arm strength could improve, still playable at 3B. Decent carry, ball slightly sinks before bag. Accurate, on target most of the time. Can throw from different arm angles, loses some carry on the run. Grade: 45

Run: Decent out of the box. Has some acceleration, but lacks burst. Fairly big stride length, has some stiffness down the line. Not a threat to steal bases. Lacks lateral speed and quickness. Grade: 40

Overall: Roby has hit for a fairly high average during his minor league career and won a home run derby, but he still lacks a carrying tool. His bat gets hurt by his below-average approach and pitch recognition. He gets beat by velocity up and advanced spin. Without a refinement in approach, the strikeouts are only going to get worse. He displayed a toned-down load in spring last year, which should help. His raw power can be impressive at times, but Roby has not tapped into it as a professional. If he can drive the ball out of the ballpark more frequently, he could become an interesting bat. The toned approach might sap some power, but it is yet to be seen. As a fielder, he is playable at third base. He has solid hands and shows the ability to move side to side. There is enough arm for the position. It could use some added strength, but is accurate enough to play. He is nothing special as a runner, won't steal a bag but not a clogger. Overall, he looks like an up/down guy that could possibly bump into a bench role if game power develops.

Evaluator: Joe Drake

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 180 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2012 IFA (BOS)
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Athletic frame, fits listed numbers. Fairly standard, unassuming build; strong lower half. Live body. Hamstring strain in 2020; Wrist Sprain 2021.

Hit: Right: Slightly open stance with high hands at the head, upright body, and shoulder-width base. Quiet hands; loads with moderate leg lift that hovers a touch. Average bat speed and linear bat path. Left: Slightly open stance with hands at the letters, upright body, and feet slightly wider than shoulder-width. Sharper leg lift than from the right side; flat bat path but slightly steeper than from the right. Aggressive swinger on strikes, but good feel for the zone and will work a walk. Doesn't expand much but will swing through pitches in the zone. Whiffs on pitches he should hit and even some he should drive. Swings hard, looks to shoot line drives which fits his power profile. Good command of the strike zone will boost OBP, but lacks contact skills of a good hitter. Grade: 40

Power: Average raw pop and average bat speed. Linear swing path limits over the fence potential, but speed and baserunning will help him rack up extra base hits. Poor contact skills will likely keep him from realizing any real power potential. Not a good swing path adjustment candidate due to swing and miss issues. Grade: 40

Field: Solid outfielder but doesn't quite have the chops/instincts for center. Strong arm makes him a natural fit for right field, but the bat is weak for a corner. Reads and routes are average but has good closing speed. Solid defensive package overall, but a tweener profile due to the weak offensive package. Grade: 50

Arm: Strong arm, easy carry out of the hand, generally on target. Plenty of strength and accuracy for right field. Good speed helps him get in position to make good throws more often than not. Grade: 60

Run: Clocked 3.96 H-1st from left side. Good runner with above-average top end speed and good instincts on the basepaths. Out of the box quickly and accelerates well. Can score from 1st on balls in the gap. True stolen base threat; good reads and jumps and gets up to speed quickly. Lack of top end speed keeps him from a double-plus grade, but feel and quickness help it play up and make him dangerous on the bases. Grade: 60

Overall: Athletic, toolsy player who doesn't quite have the skills to succeed at the major league level. Good instincts on the basepaths don't carry over to the outfield and whiff issues at the plate limit his offensive impact. Best suited as a pinch runner and corner outfield defensive replacement.

Evaluator: Joe Heintskill

Age: 20 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 175 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 Round 6
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Strong upper body with broad shoulders tapering to a narrow waist. Solid athlete; projectable frame which should maintain athleticism and speed as he fills out physically.

Hit: Open stance with hands just above shoulders; feet slightly wider than shoulder width; pronounced leg kick as a timing mechanism. Hands work well, short swing with above-average bat speed; rotates hips well. Needs to work on approach; issues with pitch recognition, tends to sell out for power. Grade: 40

Power: Bat speed coupled with projectable frame that should add strength could bring solid average power down the road. Bat path features slight uppercut but contact is generally of a line drive nature. His plus speed should allow for him to generate extra base hits even if over the fence power doesn't fully materialize. Grade: 50

Field: Potential decent defender up the middle; speed and athleticism give him some additional range. He fields the ball out in front and has soft hands; transfers the ball well; shows good footwork working to his arm side. Grade: 45

Arm: Fluid, quick arm; releases ball well; good carry across the diamond; enough arm to handle SS long term. Does have some accuracy issues which cause overall grade to play closer to average. Grade: 50

Run: Plus runner; especially once he's underway; speed should be an asset both on the bases and on defense. Has been timed at 6.4 second in the 60. Grade: 60

Overall: Rosario has an interesting collection of tools. At he plate, he has the potential to hit for enough average and provide some pop; approach must improve for projection to come to fruition. Defensively, he should be able to remain in the middle of the diamond given his speed and athleticism. Like most high school draftees the profile carries a fair amount of risk given the relative distance from maximizing his potential.

Evaluator: Joe Heintskill

Age: 27 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 246 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Average height with a strong lower half. Long limbs with a high waist and broad shoulders. At 26 there's no physical projection remaining. Had right shoulder surgery in 2020 offseason.

Delivery & Mechanics: Stretch only; tall and fall. Hands high; high leg kick and long arm path that wraps behind his back. 3/4 arm slot with a quick arm and good extension. High effort in the delivery; inconsistent follow through; will sometimes overthrow causing him to fall off aggressively to the first-base side.

Fastball: Elite velocity; sits 97-100 t102; runs to arm-side especially in the bottom of the strike zone. Lacks ability to locate the pitch consistently causing it to be less effective than velocity/movement profile would suggest. Grade: 70

Slider: Sits 87-89 and offers a nice velocity separation off his fastball. Short, tight vertical break; inconsistent shape, at times losing bite. Has confidence in the pitch and is willing to throw it in most situations. Grade: 60

Changeup: Very firm; regularly 94-95. Lacks conviction with pitch; arm speed noticeably slows; movement profile is more lateral; pitch lacks tumble. Grade: 30

Control and Command: Well below-average control and command. Struggles to locate both fastball and slider let alone throw quality strikes. Lack of control adds additional risk and limits overall value of the profile. Control: 30 | Command: 30

Overall: Classic power reliever with a strong two-pitch combo. Given his age and build, there's no additional projection. Present stuff is more than good enough to get hitters out at the big league level. Fastball and slider quality would indicate a high-leverage relief role but lack of control adds risk and limits ultimate ceiling.

Physical Description: Strong, thick frame; bottom-heavy with XL hips and thighs. Has outgrown listed weight. Muscle on the frame, but not lean. Built like a catcher. Mostly maxed out; some room for weight in the chest and shoulders. Conditioning will be a factor.

Hit: Square stance with hands head-high; Mostly upright with shoulder-width base. Active hands pre-load; low leg lift used for trigger with slight hand load. Steeper swing path with average bat speed. Aggressive swinger, not very selective in the zone and will expand on spin. Slugger approach looking to pull everything, but can go the other way with authority when he chooses. Some swing and miss in the zone and a bit of a grooved swing limit hit tool's upside. Solid feel for zone; will take a walk. Grade: 40

Power: Plus raw power from strong body and average bat speed. Lofted swing path helps get the ball in the air, but swing and miss keeps power from maximizing in games. All fields over the fence pop. Lack of speed will keep him from taking bases except on balls to the wall. Grade: 45

Field: Solid receiver. Fluid movements behind the plate; leans to receive the ball within the body. Quicker feet and actions than expected, but not "quick". Moves the body for most block attempts, but will stab instead of smothering and miss the ball. Hustles down the line to back up first. Heady player that will nab stray runners on back picks and delayed steals. Leader on the field. Grade: 50

Arm: 2.06, 1.97, 1.91, 1.84, 1.77 pop times. Flashes double plus pop times, but not consistent and sometimes only average. Accurate throws, keeps the ball down. A weapon that will keep runners honest. Grade: 60

Run: 4.51 H-1st. Accelerates quickly but top speed is very limited. Mostly station to station. Can advance on plays where he should, but nothing more. Not a stolen base threat. Grade: 30

Overall: Average defensive catcher with a plus or better arm and enough power to do damage. Defense and power combination is enough for a 3rd catcher floor, but most likely earns a backup role. Could be a regular if the hit tool ticks up or the defense takes a step forward.

Evaluator: Jason Kamlowsky

Age: 20 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2019 Round 5
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: For just turning 20, this is a really good-looking kid. Has really worked on his body since being drafted. Muscular forearms and well-defined upper body. Is still filling out through his shoulders. Lower body is coming along. Has done well to put on weight in his lower half. Can put on 15-20 additional pounds without much problem.

Hit: Classic left-handed stance. Simplified approach without much noise through his swing. Starts slightly open with a little crouch in his lower half. Shifts weight from his back leg through a slight front leg kick. Hands start by his shoulders and stay quiet through the swing path. Gets directly to the ball with a short swing. Doesn't dive after pitches away. For his height, he does a reasonable job of hitting pitches low in the zone. Solid approach at the plate, especially given his age. Grade: 50

Power: Raw power profile is intriguing. Has the frame to grow into an impact power source but not convinced that happens. With only 165 minor league plate appearances, game power is mostly projection at this point. With a shorter swing path, he can square up pitches with authority. Willingness to go to all fields may hinder his power projection a bit. Would prefer to see him not sell out for power and be a more complete hitter, especially given San Francisco's home park dimensions. Grade: 40

Field: Athletic enough for the Giants to give him a look in the outfield. Footwork around first base is adequate. Will never win a Gold Glove but also won't be a liability. Grade: 40

Arm: Very limited looks here but arm strength is above average, enough so that it would allow him to play left field. If he sticks at first base, arm will carry just fine. Grade: 50

Run: Average runner who won't steal many bases. Can lumber a bit out of the box. Not sure he has the speed to stick in the outfield, especially in a system that is so rich at the position. Grade: 40

Overall: Frechette is an interesting prospect. He was hurt for much of his senior year at Orange Lutheran High School but displayed enough power in a pre-draft workout that the Giants took him in the 5th Round and signed him to a well-above-slot contract. While he has the physical look of your prototypical left-handed slugger, I prefer he keeps his approach in hitting to all fields and being selective at the plate. The lack of a 2020 season likely set him back but his age and projectability both work in his favor. He could be much higher on this list in a year.

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 225 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 4
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Big athletic build. Very strong lower half with a thick core and broad shoulders. Good functional mobility but can look stiff at times.

Delivery & Mechanics: Windup starts off-set towards 1B edge of the rubber. Uses a medium high leg-kick to stack trunk and begin downhill move. Reaches back with upper half, possibly a bit too far, to create separation, generating above average power and arm speed from an over-the-top slot. Not an overly long arm action that helps repeatability, though the posture issue created does alter mechanical efficiency through some clear timing issues. Stretch starts with front foot/hip closed off which appears to help stay stacked more naturally.

Fastball: 92-95 and can reach back for 97. Above average velo and near elite raw spin but below average movement profile due to heavy cutting. Cut does help induce a high GB% but doesn't offer much whiff potential due to command issues. Velo does tend to dip later in outings. Improving spin efficiency would likely help both feel and movement, showing there's still a gap between current offering and future potential. Grade: 55

Curveball: 79-83 with massive, sharp vertical break. Another high spin offering but the efficiency does appear to be better. True CB axis that plays plus virtually anywhere in the zone. Strong swing and miss offering down to both LHHs and RHHs. Does flash a legit double-plus hammer at times though command presently caps ceiling. Grade: 60

Changeup: Mid-80s with above average fade. Over-the-top slot makes it difficult for hitters to pick up and comfort throwing it has improved. Doesn't throw it as much as he could, likely due to still developing feel, though he does show confidence by sprinkling in some nice same-handed CHs to mix things up. Movement profile and recent improvements suggest potential for at least an average third offering. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Seems to have better feel with secondaries than the FB. FB cut combined with mechanical deficiencies create a hill to overcome to get the most out of the offering. Can keep it down away from barrels but struggles to hit spots consistently. Does an average job keeping the CB down to generate whiffs but will leave plenty up in hittable areas. Surprisingly good feel for keeping the CH arm-side. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: Rivera has been tested as a starter since going pro, though it's looking more and more likely that he's destined for a future as a reliever. He performed well in 2019 and made strides towards remaining a starter, but he'll need to improve his fastball profile and mechanical efficiency if he wants to do so. His stuff would likely play up in short stints anyway, where he has less time to lose feel and can just lean on his CB, making a return to the pen the most obvious outcome.

Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Anthony Franco

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 260 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 IFA (MIN)
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Listed at 6-4, 260. On-mound presence; tall, boxy frame. Physically developed, no remaining projection. Thick lower half with massive thighs.

Delivery & Mechanics: Works solely from the stretch; rare look for a starting pitcher but leads to atypical simplicity in his delivery. Throws with extremely little effort. Low 3/4 arm slot with a longer arm stroke; that combination of arm angle and long arm action give left-handed hitters a really long look at the ball before it leaves his hand.

Fastball: Works 90-93. Low arm slot not conducive to generating vertical hop on the fastball. Plays horizontally with what appears to be deliberate variation in the movement; can run it arm-side to jam right-handed hitters or cut it when working glove-side. Plays much better against righties. Grade: 45

Curveball: Fourth pitch in his arsenal. Has a little more bite than the slider but lacks traditional curveball depth. Grade: 45

Slider: Sweepy, mid-80's slider. Locates glove-side and down. Pitch has some two-plane movement but doesn't have the bite to miss many bats at higher levels. Grade: 45

Changeup: Advanced feel for vertically oriented changeup. Mimics fastball arm speed to aid deception and has enough drop to tumble below the barrel. Best bat-missing secondary. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Repeats delivery despite average athleticism because it's so simple. Can throw the fastball in the zone when needed to work back into counts. Advanced ability to locate secondaries down in the zone: changeup arm-side, slider glove-side. Fringe raw stuff might force him to nibble a little more against higher-level hitters but projects for plus control in a vacuum. Advanced understanding for reading hitters' swings and sequencing accordingly. Control: 60 | Command: 55

Overall: Teng's a pitchability right-hander acquired from the Twins as part of the 2019 Sam Dyson trade. Physical with a low-effort delivery, he should have a better chance than most pitchers to stay healthy. Other than an above-average changeup, his arsenal is just OK. Teng's fastball doesn't have the ride to get above barrels, and the breaking stuff is fringy. But he has good feel for the finer arts of pitching and throws plenty of strikes. He projects as a dependable back-of-the-rotation starter, particularly if the changeup allows him to handle left-handed hitters despite their favorable looks at his lower arm slot.

Age: 27 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 205 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 Round 24 (MIN)
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Conflicting reports list him as 6-foot-1, 190-pounds and then 5-foot-11, 205 pounds. My money is on the 5-foot-11, 205-pound frame. Well built, physical body, a lot of current muscle on the frame, done growing physically.

Hit: Starts in an open stance, keeping weight in his toes. Utilizes a hand waggle with barrel tilting from over his shoulder to out in front of his body. Feet start shoulder width apart. Does not stay as linear as he can due to open stance and weight in toes, slight lean over plate during leg lift stride. Fairly level bat path, maybe a slight amount of loft. Bat path stays fairly level due to use of his back leg getting down and his front leg moving forward, not a lot of lockout. Under-average bat-to-ball skills. He uses a swing that would generally employ more contact but maintains a below-average strikeout rate. Under-rotates back foot, would generally make him an opposite field hitter. Does spray ball well, more pull-side contact on ground balls but fairly spaced out for all hit types. More opposite-field on fly balls. Knows how to work a count, slightly above-average walk rate. Hits the ball extremely hard. Other than a slight lean over the plate, he has a pretty good contact swing, sort of limiting his contact potential. Might not walk enough to make lack of contact work in the Major Leagues. Grade: 40

Power: Davis has a lot of thump in his bat. Hits the ball extremely hard. His raw B.P. power does not translate perfectly to the game side, but that might be for best. He takes a really good contact approach swing and still hits for above-average power. His bat path is fairly level with a little bit of loft. Power generally goes to the opposite field thanks to his under-rotated back foot but can certainly pull a ball over the wall. Swing would suggest an extra-base hit approach but he just brute forces the ball over the wall. Grade: 55

Field: Capable of playing all three outfield positions. Has only played right field so far in the Major Leagues. Pure speed makes up for below-average jumps and route taking. I think the Giants question his range and he might be destined for a corner position while playing center field if necessity requires it. Grade: 50

Arm: Average arm, throws have some carry and accuracy but it is fairly average for a Major League arm. Despite playing only right field, he might be better suited for left field. Would be an above-average left-fielder. Grade: 50

Run: Was ranked by baseball savant as having a sprint speed in the 97th percentile. That is pure speed. Hard to find videos of his speed on display thanks to his acumen for home runs, walks, and strikeouts. Hustles out of the box on ground balls. Grade: 60

Overall: Davis owns a rare power/speed combination. His game power is limited due to his swing but he would make far less (unpalatable) contact if he sold out for power. Unfortunately, even with a contact-approached swing, he does not make that much contact. A lot of his value at the plate will stem from his ability to improve the amount of contact he makes. Luckily, he is a passable fielder but his real calling card is his power and speed. Real potential is there, but the lack of contact may squander it.

Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Trevor Hooth

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 165 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 4 (ATL)
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Long, lanky frame. Lean build. Looks an easy 20 pounds heavier than his listed weight, still with some more room to add to the frame.

Fastball: 90-94 T96. Generates some armside run low in the zone. It can play up in the zone, but he has a tendency to sail it and throw it too high to be competitive. He can also fall into trouble when he tries too hard to nibble the corners too much. Generally the upper echelon of his velo is his four-seamer, the movement is the two seem variant of the pitch. Grade: 50

Curveball: 79-81. Sharp 1-7 shape. This pitch generates a lot of vertical movement. It can generate whiffs when it bottoms out of the zone. He can also locate it well to the gloveside corner. Much like his fastball he has a tendency to leave it up in the zone. It does a good job maintaining its shape up in the zone, but it also is hittable. It shows flashes of being plus, and with more consistent whiffs it could get there. Grade: 55

Changeup: 85-87. Armside fade low in the zone. It's a change of pace more than anything. There isn't enough velo separation to make it a true weapon. It can get some whiffs because of sequencing, especially at the bottom of the velo range. Grade: 40

Control and Command: All of his pitches have a tendency to climb the ladder too much, especially his fastball. All three of his pitches tend to miss the corners, but not egregiously. For the most part he is around the zone, unless his fastball sails or he spikes the curveball. He doesn't concede when behind in the count, he'll continue to nibble for weak contact which results in potentially misleading walk numbers. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Beck can be a starter with a little more development on his changeup. When he is controlling his arsenal, the hitters are in for a tough day. His breaking ball could be a legitimate plus pitch, and it's very close as is. The Giants saw something in him to acquire him as a part of the Mark Melancon trade. There’s a rotation future, but also could fallback into a bullpen role with his fastball/curveball combination.

Evaluator: Trevor Hooth

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Thick build, looks heavier than the listed weight. He's at physical maturity in terms of weight.

Delivery & Mechanics: Over the top arm slot. Fluid delivery. Starts facing square to the plate. Hands are face height, offset to the right side of his body. Knee reaches chest height at the top of his balance point. Back leg stays tall as he extends out. Front shoulder is higher than back shoulder when his front foot lands. Drags back foot through on the finish.

Fastball: 92-94 T97. Works a four-seamer at the knees. Mixes in a two-seam variant that generates armside run. When he dots up the fastball on the corner it can generate some whiffs with the right sequencing. If the hitter knows it's coming, it can be easy to barrel up. The issue becomes that hitters see a heavy dose of this offering. Grade: 55

Curveball: 78-80. 12-6 movement. Can use it earlier in the count, then tighten up the break as it falls off the table for strikeouts. This is his go to whiff pitch, and for good reason. When he throws the tighter breaking variant it's a very tough pitch to hit. Will throw it early and often, and tries to pepper the knees or below. Grade: 60

Changeup: 85-87. Armside fade similar to the two-seamer. This is more of an offering he flashes to change pace, and doesn't frequent the repertoire. Grade: 40

Control and Command: He likes to live at the knees with all of his pitches. He can miss up with the fastball, or miss off the plate left or right with any of his pitches. His curveball is the pitch he commands best, he can miss below the zone, but rarely misses in a place where damage can be done. Walk numbers are very low because he goes right after hitters, which means he gives up his share of hits too. Control: 55 | Command: 45

Overall: With his two pitch mix and command leading the way, there's a few different directions that Castro's career could head. If he brings the changeup along there's a change for rotation, but more than likely he finds himself in the bullpen. That wouldn't be such a bad thing. He has Tommy John in his history as well. His two pitch mix and command can bode well for a future higher leverage role if everything clicks.

Age: 26 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 206 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2016 Round 14
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Tall, slender frame. Long legs, high-waisted. Medium build with some room to still add weight, if he can. Long levered and deceptively athletic.

Delivery & Mechanics: Works first base side of the rubber and tilts his back slightly to the plate in his leg life and gather. Hides the ball behind his body well as he extends. Strides off towards the first base side. Gets good extension in his delivery, which is cross body. Tends to fall off at the end with some effort. Uses drive leg well and gets good hip/shoulder separation. Hiding the ball behind his body, his extension and arm slot give his delivery some deception.

Fastball: 88-92 and hits 94. Gets slightly above average spin and plays above its below average velocity thanks to its spin and extension. Competes for swinging strikes in the zone in the low-90s. Average control of the pitch. Grade: 50

Curveball: 79-82 tops out at 84. His cross body delivery and 3/4 arm slot gives it a 1-7 type shape rather than typical vertical downward movement. It cuts across the plate and in on right handers and away on lefties. Low spin. Average to fringe average command. Direction can make it hard for hitters to get on unless he leaves it up. Grade: 50

Slider: 83-85 with 2-8 direction to the hitter. Looks like a harder version of his curveball but shares similar horizontal break as fastball, making it easier to tunnel. Middling spin and fringe average command Grade: 45

Changeup: 81-83. Good arm speed to sell the pitch and vertical fade. Lacks horizontal movement. Keeps his fastball off right handers effectively. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Menez's cross body delivery creates control issues though he repeats his delivery decently. Some effort to the delivery and has caused him to fall off to the third base side at times. Has struggled with walks in the minors. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Menez has four fringe-average to average pitches and a deceptive delivery that helps him get more swings and misses than pitches with his stuff and velocity normally would. He doesn't locate all that effectively but lives on the fringes of the zone. There is some effort to his delivery that does appear to affect his control, but he manages to miss bats and compete thanks to that deception. Menez has the build and stuff of a back end starter but the command might limit him to a long-relief or a spot starter role.

Evaluator: Mike Kurland

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Lean stature with room for growth. High waist; long arms. Appears to be in good shape.

Delivery & Mechanics: Pitches from the stretch. Glove begins at waist level, never coming higher prior to entering his stride towards home. Quick movement to home; works at a medium pace. Knee comes up to about the waist. Sits into glutes and creates good hip/shoulder separation. Throws sidearm.

Fastball: 93-98 MPH and able to hit triple digits at times. His delivery adds deception to the fastball and it does show cut and occasional sink. It does have life to it and is great at causing whiffs. He relies on it heavily and although he can miss his spots, the velocity and movement help cover up the mistakes. Grade: 60

Slider: Complimenting well to the fastball, Doval offers a hard, sweeping slider. It breaks hard and often hits the glove side of the plate or gets chases but can hang at times. Again, having similar arm action on the fastball as he does with the fastball can assist in covering up the location mistakes. The similar arm action paired with the angle at which he delivers the pitch makes for it to be difficult to hit and adds to the deception. Grade: 50

Control and Command: When Doval hits his spots, he is essentially untouchable. Unfortunately, that can be far a few in between. He is often missing the zone but the stuff is absolutely electric and even when he misses his spots in the zone, he is able to miss bats. But he does struggle to consistently spot the ball where it is supposed to go. Control: 30 | Command: 30

Overall: When Doval is on, he is tough to hit and can be great. However, he is prone to walks and due to the ongoing issues with free passes, it will limit his potential. He has the two solid to plus pitches and there is serious strikeout upside but he cannot seem to put the stuff together with control and command and until we see it all come together, he will have issues in high leverage situations as he moves up the ladder of pro ball.

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 230 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2019 Round 2
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Big, burly build. Long legs and levers. Tall target at first base. Athletic for size. Strong throughout his frame. Already physically filled out without any room left for adding to his frame.

Hit: Even base and slightly open stance. Moderate leg lift as a timing mechanism into his load. Moderate weight transfer. Smooth, adjustable swing. Takes hard cuts. Good bat control and keeps his head on the ball. Shows good rotation in swing, letting his hips lead his hands. Comfortable letting the ball travel and driving it the other way with strength in his hands and wrists. Stays through the ball on his swings. Able to pull hands in on inside pitches. Patient approach at the plate. Has a chance to have an average hit tool. Grade: 45

Power: Easy bat speed with quick, strong hands and wrists. Creates a good vertical bat angle with a load to get the ball in the air. Has power to his pull side and to the opposite field. Shows ability to match plane. Should hit enough to get to above average raw power. Grade: 55

Field: Moves fairly well around the bag. Sets up a good target. Inconsistent hands fielding. Grade: 40

Arm: No looks at throwing arm other than flips to first, which were on-time, accurate and led the pitchers well. Didn't have any issues getting the ball there from distance with a flip. Got the ball out of his glove quickly without rushing. Grade: 45

Run: 4.35-4.45 home-to-first times. Can use long legs to extend himself on runs down the line but not a strong runner out of the box. Grade: 30

Overall: It's a high bar to clear to hit enough to profile as above average, or even average, at first base. Wyatt has the hit tool, strength, swing and power to be a good major league hitter, though the bat might end up being a little light as a first baseman. Wyatt is a big, burly ballplayer who really doesn't profile at another position so he has to hit to make an impact and play first. He shouldn't have a problem clearing the wall in right in San Francisco or driving the ball to the gap in the opposite field there. Being average as a hitter at first base without defensive value or speed makes it hard to profile as above average, though there's a good chance Wyatt can hit enough to do it if things break right.

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 208 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Round 4
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Tall, broad-shouldered, and near physical max. Strong lower-half, moderate athleticism, with some maintenance required long term.

Delivery & Mechanics: Throws from the stretch; short arm action, over the top a lot, plus arm speed. High leg lift, repeats well, strong leg block will lose his release point as the game wears on. Generates velocity from strong lower half and fast arm.

Fastball: Sits 93-95 mph, up to 98 mph in the spring of 2020. High ride fastball that plays best high armside. He shows the ability to command that area best and it generates his best results. Tough to barrel up and will throw it to all four quadrants. Good command of the pitch with the velocity to play in the pen. Grade: 55

Curveball: Second pitch versus lefthanded hitters, used in lieu of slider. More 12-6 break, but slurvy shape, looks more like a variation of his slider with less velocity offering at 80-84 mph. Not as good as his slider long term but it serves its purpose and gets results. Grade: 45

Slider: Hard tight slider, 86-88 mph, clocked as high as 89. Late downward break, he throws it hard, and can manipulate break to add more late drop. Best swing and miss pitch, plus velocity, tunnels well off of his fastball. Grade: 55

Changeup: Low-80s changeup that can become a solid third offering. Sits 82-83 with solid fade and tumble, lacks consistent shape. Gets barreled high in the zone. Needs to command pitch better for better results. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Below average control and command. Tough to barrel up in part because he misses the zone with frequency. Struggles to hold his release point and the strike zone as starts wear on. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: A loud arm with big velocity and good pitch shape. The type of stuff that can miss a lot of bats out of the pen. Was used mostly as a reliever at Arizona State in 2020 and that's likely where his future lies. He's built like a reliever, throws like a reliever, and has reliever stuff. He might develop into a reliable backend bullpen arm with a nice one-two punch with his fastball and curveball. Lacks command of the zone and likely can't be used in anything more than an inning or two.
