Feb 2021 Report

Evaluator: Mike Kurland

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6'2
Weight: 160 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Long legs, thin build. Plenty of room to fill in the frame.

Delivery & Mechanics: Windup; tall and fall motion. Throws from a 3/4 arm slot with moderate effort. Starts with glove chest high, plant leg about waist high. Slow, steady and simple delivery. Average hip/shoulder separation. Easily repeatable.

Fastball: Sometimes flat, 91-95 MPH fastball. Acosta does have life to it up in the zone. It appears to play better arm side. Control and command comes and goes. Grade: 50

Curveball: 78-83 MPH. It is inconsistent. Often categorized as a slider. Has a slurvy action at times and other times it will be more vertical. Will fall back on it if he loses feel of the fastball against RHH. Showed willingness to throw this pitch even down in the count. Tends to leave it up or bury it in the dirt more than you'd like but can throw it for strikes. Below average command but good movement most of the time. Grade: 45

Changeup: 85-88 MPH Tends to utilize it vs LHH. When he hits his spots, it looks solid. Decent horizontal movement and some fade to it when utilized arm side. Not as much glove side. Grade: 40

Control and Command: He lacks both. Tends to miss his spots and miss around the zone. Will bury offspeed offerings in the dirt. Will miss low with the fastball and the curve tends to miss outside on the glove side or hang up in the zone more than you’d like. Will attack the zone with fastballs if he falls behind. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: He showed some potential in flashes but consistently struggled with locating the zone and hitting his spots. The fastball and changeup combination show the most promise with the fastball being the better of the two. If he can find a consistent feel for them. If he cannot improve the command, the bullpen might be more suitable.

Mar 2021 Report

Evaluator: Mike Kurland

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 196 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Round 3
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Looks muscular but appears to have some projection left in the frame. An overall athletic frame and build.

Hit: Contact-first hitter. Lays off of the first often. Slightly bent at the legs and slightly open. More of a narrow, upright stance otherwise with the hands at helmet height. Keeps back elbow up at about shoulder height. Small bat movement prior to the pitcher entering delivery. Takes a medium sized step and as he lifts his front leg he moves backward with the lower half and he loads and then steps forward allowing the momentum to assist in creating torque in the swing. The bat and hand speed is great. It allows him to get around on pitches all around the zone but could also be part of what gets him ahead of pitches as well. The hit tool flashes above-average at times but he makes a lot of soft contact as he gets ahead and out front of pitches. Does have a fairly patient approach that leads to seeing pitches and drawing walks. However, if he is behind the count he can be vulnerable to chasing on 2-strike breaking balls. Due to often getting out in front of pitches, he also tends to pull the ball often as well. Grade: 50

Power: It is simply difficult to project in-game power. Ornelas has the quick hands and bat but also has more of a linear swing and although he can make good contact, the raw power potential does not play up in games. At times he seems to open up a bit early and not get the necessary torque into well hit balls and they just don't carry over the fence and become loud fly-outs. He does have average to above-average raw power but it has yet to carry over to games. Grade: 30

Field: A good first step and able to square up the ball well. Can get stuff at times but not often. Fluid to the left and right and no issue with transferring the ball from the glove to his hand. Nothing flashy but keeps it simple in the field. Grade: 50

Arm: He's able to make throws to first and even doing so on the move and off balance. The ball doesn't seem to have a lot of velocity behind it but he's able to make the throws. Might be better suited for 2B if the arm strength doesn't improve. Grade: 45

Run: At times he isn't as quick to get out the box as you'd like but quick to get into second gear and can beat out soft contact and infield ground balls. He flashes the speed on the base paths with getting double digit steals in each of his seasons as well as solid success rates. The speed is an above-average tool that allows him to make up for some of the soft contact issues. Does not blow you away with his speed but does utilize it well. Grade: 55

Overall: Ornelas offers a decent floor for a player. The defense will play. Could end up moving over to 2B. Regardless, the hit tool will need to improve. The plate discipline is there in terms of laying off pitches but it could hinder him as the counts can produce called strikes leaving him behind in the count which leads to chasing bad pitches in 2-strike counts. He could possibly be better off being a bit more aggressive early in the count and take advantage of the early count strikes as they are often fastballs. The issue is there is no standout tool and although the floor of production all around could be good, the ceiling and projection is currently limited.

Mar 2021 Report

Evaluator: Mike Kurland

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 181 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Stocky, ordinary build with minimal projection. Short stature with a high waist and long legs

Delivery & Mechanics: Windup; glove sits around chin level throughout motion. Knee comes up just above the waist; sits into glutes and remains low as he delivers. Creates decent hip/shoulder separation. Releases from a high 3/4 arm slot. Creates some deception in his delivery. Locks the plant leg as he follows through. Can change his tempo. Works at a medium speed often but will speed up his pace of work at times. Will slow down in the stretch. Easy to repeat mechanics.

Fastball: 88-90 mph; can get up to 92-94 mph. Some ride to it; can get flat. Able to attack the zone with it and helps him get back into counts. Able to hit his spots often. Plays well up in the zone and typically attacks players up. Does not give up a lot of hard contact. Can hit the black on both sides of the plate; does not attack low in the zone often with the fastball. Lacks desired velocity. Grade: 50

Curveball: 76 mph Slow, slurvy breaking ball. Appears to get similar arm action behind the curve as he does with the fastball. Throws it with confidence and able to both attack the zone and bury it while inducing swings. Willing to attack the zone and will induce weak contact and miss bats in and out of the zone with it. Can hang the occasional curve but is more likely to miss in the dirt. Complements the fastball well giving him two pitches he can lean on. Grade: 50

Changeup: 81-82 mph. Does not use it often but can throw it against right handers at times. Has some movement and fade to it. Does not have a lot of differential in velocity from the fastball. Would like to see that improve or the movement improve. Utilization is minimal as of now but if he can work on it, it would play well with the fastball and changeup. Grade: 40

Control and Command: More times than not, he keeps it in the zone. Can control and command the fastball and curveball well but will occasionally miss the spots. Able to attack the black of the plate as well. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Injuries caused Hernandez to be limited to two and three inning outings in 2019 and then the 2020 season ultimately has us having a lot of questions about him as we enter 2021. Often said to be a crafty lefty, he did show the ability to keep hitters off balance and induce weak contact a bit. However, the lack of velocity and third pitch leave a lot to be desired here. A lot will be determined if he can add an above average third pitch and velocity.

Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Mike Kurland

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Lean stature with room for growth. High waist; long arms. Appears to be in good shape.

Delivery & Mechanics: Pitches from the stretch. Glove begins at waist level, never coming higher prior to entering his stride towards home. Quick movement to home; works at a medium pace. Knee comes up to about the waist. Sits into glutes and creates good hip/shoulder separation. Throws sidearm.

Fastball: 93-98 MPH and able to hit triple digits at times. His delivery adds deception to the fastball and it does show cut and occasional sink. It does have life to it and is great at causing whiffs. He relies on it heavily and although he can miss his spots, the velocity and movement help cover up the mistakes. Grade: 60

Slider: Complimenting well to the fastball, Doval offers a hard, sweeping slider. It breaks hard and often hits the glove side of the plate or gets chases but can hang at times. Again, having similar arm action on the fastball as he does with the fastball can assist in covering up the location mistakes. The similar arm action paired with the angle at which he delivers the pitch makes for it to be difficult to hit and adds to the deception. Grade: 50

Control and Command: When Doval hits his spots, he is essentially untouchable. Unfortunately, that can be far a few in between. He is often missing the zone but the stuff is absolutely electric and even when he misses his spots in the zone, he is able to miss bats. But he does struggle to consistently spot the ball where it is supposed to go. Control: 30 | Command: 30

Overall: When Doval is on, he is tough to hit and can be great. However, he is prone to walks and due to the ongoing issues with free passes, it will limit his potential. He has the two solid to plus pitches and there is serious strikeout upside but he cannot seem to put the stuff together with control and command and until we see it all come together, he will have issues in high leverage situations as he moves up the ladder of pro ball.

Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Mike Kurland

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-9
Weight: 260 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 Round 12
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Big frame that's filled out. Long limbs and high waist. Looks every bit of his size. No projection left here.

Delivery & Mechanics: Keeps is simple and for a tall pitcher it is repeatable as the game goes on. Seems a bit stiff in his delivery and could benefit from utilizing his lower half more. Windeup; glove remains at just above waist high. Knee comes up just above waist high and drives forward. Remains a little high and appears to utilize the upper half more. Lower half could benefit from more use. Would help generate some power and assist in velocity. Does sit into his glutes but seems a little stiff .Does set and pivot front leg and allows for the extension. Average hip/shoulder separation. Lacks above average scap flexibility. Throws from a high 3/4 arm slot. Leans to first base slightly as he extends and releases.

Fastball: 86-88 MPH. There is movement to it that allows it to play up well in the zone. There is some arm-side run with life to the fastball. He throws it as both an out and a whiff pitch with confidence. Although the velo is less than desirable, he is able to pain the black on both sides and attack up in the zone with success. He hits his spots and attacks the zone often. Velo is the concern but the rest is there. Grade: 50

Curveball: 72-75 MPH. Looping curve with 12-6 action. Able to put it at the knees and attack the zone but can leave it over the middle of the plate too often but does not get hit hard even when he misses his spots. Attacks RHH and LHH with it but it could use work. Has potential and can flash above average at times but it's the lack of consistency that keeps it from being above-average. Grade: 45

Changeup: 77-79 MPH. Good fade and movement on it. Generates whiffs and soft contact. Will throw against both LHH and RHH but it is mostly used against LHH. Able to paint the corners and the black as well. He induces swings and misses both in and out of the zone. Good differential in velo from the fastball. Keeps good arm action and throws with a similar arm speed as the fastball. Grade: 60

Control and Command: The control and command is just great. Can hit his spots more times than not with every pitch. Able to locate with pinpoint accuracy a ton. Even when he misses his spots, he tends to miss in ways that don't allow for a ton of damage. Control: 60 | Command: 60

Overall: Although there have been some injuries and the velocity is less than desirable, apparently he took the appropriate steps towards correcting it. Ober has improved his mechanics in 2020 to utilize the lower half more to help take strain off his throwing arm. In the process, he also added a few ticks to the fastball and it is said to be sitting 91-92 MPH. Adding velo to what is plus command and control and great strikeout and walk rates could be just what he needs to take the leap. There is a relief risk here but the profile could play to a high-floor in production due to the ability to go deep into games. In 2019, he managed to pitch 6 innings or more in 9 of his 14 starts. There is a chance for a back-end rotation type of starter here with a bullpen role the more likely outcome.

Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Mike Kurland

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 215 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 5
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Long legs; high waist. Frame is full with little remaining projection. Looks his size.

Delivery & Mechanics: Windup; works quick to home. Short arm action. Pivots and locks lead leg. Big follow through with back leg leading to him falling toward first base. Keeps the mechanics simple and easy to repeat. Starts with glove waist level and raises it up and over his head and back down as he goes through the windup. Knee comes up to the letters and almost meets the glove. Doesn't sit into glutes as much and generates good hip/shoulder separation. Throws from a 3/4 arm slot.

Fastball: 92-95 MPH T96. Velocity sits low to mid 90s with ride and arm-side run. Able to attack the zone with success. Keeps batters getting under it when he locates it atop the zone. Willing to throw east and west while attacking up as well. Does not put it down in the zone often. Command can get away from him at times. Really seems to attack away on RHH and attack the black. Will also attack glove side against LHH. Overall, Sands just appears to be comfortable throwing the fastball glove side. He can utilize it for strikeouts as he generates whiffs with it up in the zone on 2-strike counts. Grade: 50

Curveball: 76-78 MPH. Good break to it. 12-6 curve that can get some 1-7 movement to it at times. Able to attack RHH well with it. Able to locate outside the zone and create whiffs with it. Can be utilized as an out pitch. Oftens attacks glove side against RHH and generates chases as well as hitting the zone a good amount of the time. Induces a lot of weak contact. Compliments the fastball well. Grade: 50

Changeup: 78 MPH. Good velocity differential from the fastball. Changeup has good arm-side fade. Keeps batters guessing and off balance as it moves similarly to the fastball but comes in slower and with more of that arm-side break. Throws more often to LHH but can struggle to locate it. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Sands can hit the zone often but doesn't quite hit his spots at times. He tends to focus on the outside edges and will get a good amount of chases and called strikes. He is able to produce whiffs often and that swing-and-miss was evident at every stop and also done with every pitch. He can hit spots around the strike zone. Control: 50 | Command: 45

Overall: There's potential here. He has three pitches that are solid with the fastball flashing plus potential. All seem to move well and can cause deception and keep hitters off balance. The changeup and curve are good secondary offerings and has three pitches he can throw with confidence. He limits hard contact and is able to miss bats often which shows in the strikeout numbers. There's room for growth and it's all about how much he carries the early success from his pro debut in 2019 over to 2021 after missing 2020 to the pandemic shortened season. Can see a path to being a backend SP.
