Physical Description: Stocky, ordinary build with minimal projection. Short stature with a high waist and long legs

Delivery & Mechanics: Windup; glove sits around chin level throughout motion. Knee comes up just above the waist; sits into glutes and remains low as he delivers. Creates decent hip/shoulder separation. Releases from a high 3/4 arm slot. Creates some deception in his delivery. Locks the plant leg as he follows through. Can change his tempo. Works at a medium speed often but will speed up his pace of work at times. Will slow down in the stretch. Easy to repeat mechanics.

Fastball: 88-90 mph; can get up to 92-94 mph. Some ride to it; can get flat. Able to attack the zone with it and helps him get back into counts. Able to hit his spots often. Plays well up in the zone and typically attacks players up. Does not give up a lot of hard contact. Can hit the black on both sides of the plate; does not attack low in the zone often with the fastball. Lacks desired velocity. Grade: 50

Curveball: 76 mph Slow, slurvy breaking ball. Appears to get similar arm action behind the curve as he does with the fastball. Throws it with confidence and able to both attack the zone and bury it while inducing swings. Willing to attack the zone and will induce weak contact and miss bats in and out of the zone with it. Can hang the occasional curve but is more likely to miss in the dirt. Complements the fastball well giving him two pitches he can lean on. Grade: 50

Changeup: 81-82 mph. Does not use it often but can throw it against right handers at times. Has some movement and fade to it. Does not have a lot of differential in velocity from the fastball. Would like to see that improve or the movement improve. Utilization is minimal as of now but if he can work on it, it would play well with the fastball and changeup. Grade: 40

Control and Command: More times than not, he keeps it in the zone. Can control and command the fastball and curveball well but will occasionally miss the spots. Able to attack the black of the plate as well. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Injuries caused Hernandez to be limited to two and three inning outings in 2019 and then the 2020 season ultimately has us having a lot of questions about him as we enter 2021. Often said to be a crafty lefty, he did show the ability to keep hitters off balance and induce weak contact a bit. However, the lack of velocity and third pitch leave a lot to be desired here. A lot will be determined if he can add an above average third pitch and velocity.
