Acquired: 2018 Round 12
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Strong, well built. Large frame. Displays overall body strength. Wide shoulders. Muscular thigh and legs. Not body type to add much weight, mostly filled out.

Hit: Square stance, hands at the letters. Body upright with feet shoulder width apart. Recently simplified load. Semi-active hand load with some barrel wrap. Removed large hitch. Ditched large leg kick for small step with lower half. Average bat speed on slight uppercut path. Some barrel lag through zone. Uses the whole field well. Makes solid contact. Average bat to ball skills. Aggressive hitter, approach needs to improve. Swing and miss continues to get worse. Struggles with elevated velocity and spin on the outer half. Minimized load should help pitch recognition and contact frequency. Manages to still hit for decent average despite whiffs. Toned down load should help improve contact frequency. Possible fringe average hitter. Grade: 40

Power: Above-average raw power, game power plays more below-average due to contact issues. HR power mostly pull-side, more gap power the other way. Toned approach needed for hit ability may sap game power. Has a shown ability to drive ball in past, struggled to tap into it as a pro. Strength and contact quality indicate possibility of more power with maturity. Grade: 45

Field: Solid defender. Good hands, catches what he gets to. Footwork could improve, flat footed at times. Moves well both ways despite lacking a lot of lateral speed. Shows ability to charge ball well. Playable at 3B. Grade: 45

Arm: Arm strength could improve, still playable at 3B. Decent carry, ball slightly sinks before bag. Accurate, on target most of the time. Can throw from different arm angles, loses some carry on the run. Grade: 45

Run: Decent out of the box. Has some acceleration, but lacks burst. Fairly big stride length, has some stiffness down the line. Not a threat to steal bases. Lacks lateral speed and quickness. Grade: 40

Overall: Roby has hit for a fairly high average during his minor league career and won a home run derby, but he still lacks a carrying tool. His bat gets hurt by his below-average approach and pitch recognition. He gets beat by velocity up and advanced spin. Without a refinement in approach, the strikeouts are only going to get worse. He displayed a toned-down load in spring last year, which should help. His raw power can be impressive at times, but Roby has not tapped into it as a professional. If he can drive the ball out of the ballpark more frequently, he could become an interesting bat. The toned approach might sap some power, but it is yet to be seen. As a fielder, he is playable at third base. He has solid hands and shows the ability to move side to side. There is enough arm for the position. It could use some added strength, but is accurate enough to play. He is nothing special as a runner, won't steal a bag but not a clogger. Overall, he looks like an up/down guy that could possibly bump into a bench role if game power develops.
