Feb 2021 Report

Evaluator: Mike Kinsela

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-5
Weight: 198 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Round 1
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Long and lean build with broad, extremely projectable body overall. Prototypical prep pitcher build, ideal build.

Mechanics: Abel's arm stroke gets a little long and offline at times, but that's presently the only mechanical red flag and he's already done work to improve the efficiency of his arm path. He's directional, into his lower half, and timed up over his front side, and already throws a ton of strikes.

Fastball: Pitch reached as high as 97 mph on amateur circuit, 100 mph in bullpens prior to the draft, and allegedly 101 more recently. He had a tendency to have velocity dips over the course of games but that can be improved as he gets more physical. The pitch plays with above-average sink/run down in the zone, and he can create more ride up in the zone as well. Grade: 70

Curveball: His 4th pitch right now but still a solid one, gets more on top of it than SL and creates more vertical shape, struggles separating the two at times and turns this pitch slurvy, mostly upper-70's at present in terms of velocity, has feel for it and it should be a solid pitch for him long term. Grade: 50

Slider: Solid pitch at present, good tight bite with two-plane shape and above-average spin characteristics, not thrown all that firmly yet but flashes of a plus pitch on the amateur circuit, reasonable to project it as plus but there are some inconsistencies that hold this evaluator back. Grade: 55

Changeup: Best secondary pitch on the circuit and beyond, extremely comfortable and throws the pitch with fastball arm speed and excellent pronation, good late fade with some tumble, can throw it to hitters of either handedness, bat-missing pitch. Grade: 60

Control and Command: Generally fills up the strike zone and is developing well in terms of command. Starter projection for both. Control: 60 | Command: 55

Overall: 4-pitch prep starter who was the best prep arm in '20 draft class, continues refining already-loud arsenal and has the physical projection, operation, and command projection to project a #2 starter.
