Aug 2021 Report

Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 22 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Average height. Strong throughout, but carries some extra weight in his midsection. Thick lower half. Physically maxed.

Hit: Stands upright with his knees slightly bent and his feet wide. Has opened his stance since the minor league shutdown. Keeps the bat vertical and in front of his right shoulder. Gets into a crouched position and cocks the bat backward as he loads. Utilizes a moderate leg kick as he steps into the pitch. Swing can get long. Has above-average bat speed, but tends to overswing. At its best, it's a linear swing that generates linedrive contact to the outfield, but he also has a tendency to uppercut the ball and get underneath it. Shows some feel for the barrel, but he swings through a lot of pitches, particularly on pitches down and on the inside of the plate. Opening his stance has allowed him to make better contact on inside pitches. He lacks pitch recognition, and it's an aggressive approach that will always make strikeouts a part of his gam Grade: 40

Power: Has plus raw power and a swing that gets the ball in the air to the pull side with regularity when he connects. Has the natural power to hit to the opposite field, too. Paired with his quick bat and natural strength, there's reason to believe the power plays at the major league level. Grade: 50

Field: Has familiarity with both corner positions, but probably fits best in LF. He has a thick build and fringe-average foot speed, and accordingly covers a less than average amount of ground, despite getting solid reads. Grade: 45

Arm: Strong arm with good carry from the outfield. Accurate in limited looks. Arm plays in any outfield position, and he's used it as a weapon in the minor leagues. Grade: 55

Run: Timed at 4.31 down the line from the right side, but has added some weight since getting that time. Hustles out of the box. Grade: 45

Overall: Gomez's power is his calling card, but there's significant swing and miss to his game, which will reduce the output and, in turn, the likelihood of him ever impacting a major league lineup. He's still young, but the tendencies that have haunted him since signing still exist, and there's little reason to believe those will disappear.
