Physical Description: Short and big-bodied frame on the mound. Large upper and lower half with room for physical development. Arms and shoulders lack standout features. Comes equipped with power stuff.
Delivery & Mechanics: Shortened three-quarter slot delivery from the right side. Good extension and follow through. Signs of moderate effort. Has a good rhythm and motion in arm action and delivery. Comfortable release point that is repeated fairly decently.
Fastball: Power mid-90s offering with more velocity than movement. Fastball sits 93-94 and touches 97. Commands it well low in the zone with good velocity. Lacks consistent spin and late movement. Potential plus-pitch with added movement Grade: 55
Curveball: Mid-70s breaking ball with great 12-6 movement and depth. Forces whiffs consistently with late break. Rarely left hanging in the zone, tight and compact rotation throughout. Buries it low and inside against lefties. Manipulates it well off his fastball. Grade: 60
Changeup: Low-80s changeup that is behind in development as a consistent third pitch. Sits 81-82 with good drop off in velocity. Lacks fade and tumble without much swing-and-miss. Needs more refinement and consistency. Grade: 40
Control and Command: Shows continued growth in strike-throwing ability each season. Pounds the zone with his fastball. Spots his curveball low and away against lefties and righties. Overall: Contreras has shown tremendous strides in this stage of his career. His fastball and curveball are an effective 1-2 punch along with a developing changeup. His command continues to improve by each season, and he's a name to keep an eye on within the Padres' system.
